Halo 2 (Xbox Live)

2004 - 2010
dead us
microsoft turned off the original xbox live on april 15, 2010. fourteen players refused to log out of halo 2, the last server in the world for the original xbox, and held the match for almost a month. when apache n4sir finally signed off in the early hours of may 11, that was the end of a service that started in 2002.

~ the eulogy ~

halo 2 came out on november 9, 2004 for the original xbox, and it brought the xbox live service into american living rooms in a way that no other game had managed. for years it was the reason people bought the console and the broadband connection. when microsoft announced in february 2010 that the original xbox live would shut down on april 15, the news was framed as a service end. it was actually a funeral notice for halo 2 as an online game.

about fifty players gathered on the servers in the days leading up to the shutdown date. they had figured out that if they did not log off, the underlying matchmaking would not kick them, because the system had no procedure for evicting players who were already in a match when the lights went out. microsoft watched it happen and decided not to intervene. so the servers turned off, and the matches that were running kept running. fourteen of them lasted into may.

i was on a pc the whole time. the original xbox was a niche import in turkey, with a tiny installed base relative to the console's american footprint. the cs servers at internet cafes in ankara were what teenagers were paying for in 2004-2005, not halo. i learned about the noble 14 the same way most non-xbox people did, years later, when the story circulated as one of those internet-vigil-keepers anecdotes.

~ how it landed ~

halo 2's multiplayer was the proof of what online console gaming could be: friends list, parties, ranked matchmaking, the whole vocabulary that later xbox live, psn, and steam all borrowed from. it was the first game most people played online with a controller. the headset that shipped with the console was treated as a real input device, not a novelty. it taught a generation of teenagers in north america to talk smack with a stranger over a thin wire.

~ the holdout ~

noble 14 is what they called themselves, after a halo: reach reference that landed close enough. they kept the match running by never letting anyone leave to lobby. food, sleep, plumbing, all coordinated around keeping a console plugged in. the last player to log off was apache n4sir, at 1:58 am on may 11, 2010, twenty-five days after the official shutdown. when his connection dropped, the original xbox live was gone.

~ what got buried with it ~

halo 2 itself stayed playable offline, and later returned in the master chief collection. the original xbox live as a service did not. every game that depended on it lost online play that day. halo 2 was just the loudest casualty because it was the one a group of strangers refused to let die quietly.
