Google Hire

google hire was a paid applicant-tracking system for small and medium businesses built on top of gmail and the google workspace stack. it launched in '17 out of the bebop acquisition that brought diane greene into google. it never got picked up beyond a niche customer base. shutdown was 1 september '20 with a year of customer warning. the next time google touched recruiting software it did not put a google brand on it.

google hire was a b2b product. its target customer was an hr team at a 50-to-2000-person company who already paid for google workspace and wanted to stop paying greenhouse or lever for the applicant tracking on top of it. that hr team is not me. i have never worked for a company that uses google hire.

google bought bebop in november '15 for around $380 million. bebop was diane greene's enterprise stack startup. she came in as head of google cloud as part of the deal, and bebop's actual code and team became the basis for google hire two years later. hire launched in july '17 as part of g suite for paying customers.

the pitch was integration. job posts pulled into your gmail signature and interview schedules synced with google calendar and the right rooms. all of it inside the workspace you already had open. it was a sensible product idea that priced into the workspace bundle could have been a real greenhouse competitor.

diane greene left google cloud in november '18, replaced by thomas kurian. less than a year later, on 27 august '19, google announced hire would shut on 1 september '20. existing customers got a full year to migrate to a competitor. the public reason was the standard google "we want to focus on our core mission" line. the practical reason was that with greene out, the bebop founder team had no internal sponsor for the product.

~ what it was ~

hire was a complete recruiting workflow. job board distribution, candidate intake, resume parsing, interview scheduling, offer letters. it sat under the same admin console as gmail and drive and was billed in the per-seat workspace pricing model. the candidate side never saw a google-branded ui; recruiters managed the pipeline, applicants just saw a job board.

the under-the-hood story was bebop's. diane greene's startup had been building enterprise saas tooling before the acquisition. google folded the team into cloud, where they built hire as a vertical app on top of the existing g suite infrastructure. it was probably the cleanest example of an acquihire actually shipping a usable product before the founder moved on.

~ the kill ~

the shutdown timeline was unusually customer-friendly for google. august '19 announcement, september '20 full close. that year of grace let customers migrate to greenhouse or lever without losing data. the export tool worked. the unsubscribe flow worked. the team apparently knew this was coming for months before announcing.

the post-mortem from outside was that hire never had a clear acquisition path. greenhouse had locked up the high end. workable and lever had the mid market. google hire showed up late with the right integration story and the wrong sales motion. google workspace reps were not equipped to sell ats software to hr teams. the product needed a dedicated sales force that google was never going to fund. when greene left, the silent funding cut became loud.
