facebook gaming creator program launched in 2018 as meta's twitch-style partner tier for gaming livestreamers. it offered early feature access plus a direct support line, with monetization help on livestream donations and fan subscriptions. it briefly overtook youtube gaming in hours watched in q3 2021 before the reels pivot pulled meta's attention off the surface. dedicated partner support ended october 31 2025. the remaining monetization tools were promised through 2026 before the program would close.

~ the goodbye ~

creator-partner programs were never my side of the camera. by '18 i was 34 in ankara with a full-time job in computer vision and the moment to take up streaming had passed without notice. the program meta launched that year, the facebook gaming creator program, was the partner tier for people on the other side of that camera. i had a facebook account from 2007 that by 2025 i was logging into twice a year. the gaming surface inside it i never opened.

facebook gaming launched in early 2018 as meta's twitch-style streaming push, with the creator program sitting on top as the partner tier. eligible streamers got early access to new features. they also had a direct line to meta support plus help on monetization through livestream donations and fan subscriptions. the program was paired with a billion-dollar meta investment in training and tooling for creators. signing bonuses pulled some twitch midcats over for the launch window.

there was one real peak, in q3 2021 facebook gaming briefly overtook youtube gaming in hours watched. that was the high water mark. twitch never came under pressure, the gap to youtube widened back out within a quarter or two. meta's own attention moved on. reels became the priority and gaming stopped getting the resources to compete on partner economics.

the wind-down landed in 2025. dedicated partner support ended on october 31 2025, with the broader monetization tools promised to keep working through 2026 before the full close. by then most of the original creator class had drifted off the platform or moved their streaming to twitch and youtube primary. the announcement read as a confirmation of a thing that had already happened.

~ the decline ~

the structural problem was simple, streamers go where the audience is and on day one of the program in 2018 the audience was on twitch. meta tried to brute-force it through exclusive contracts with high-profile creators. those windows ended and most of the names went back to multi-streaming or back to twitch outright. cloud gaming on the same surface never reached scale either, stadia was already failing in the same window.

~ what got buried with it ~

the broader facebook gaming surface inside the main facebook app technically survives the program close. the dedicated creator pipeline does not. the partner managers and the training-and-bonus pool stop with the october 31 2025 cutoff. southeast asia mobile streaming continues to lean on the gaming tab for cheap live video. that is the long tail.

~ what replaced it ~

facebook gaming creator program joins a long row of failed twitch challengers. mixer went dark in july 2020 when microsoft folded its streaming bet. trovo, tencent's run at the western market, followed in june 2026. meta is the largest of the bunch by an order of magnitude and still could not bend the streaming category. in those days. the live-streaming graph has stayed a near-monopoly for over a decade and every well-funded challenger has folded inside five to seven years.
