~ the obituary ~
i am a computer engineer, so on paper forrst was near my street. in practice it was a scene, not a tool. it was an english-language, invite-only club for the silicon-valley design and dev crowd, the kind of place where you posted a mockup or a snippet and waited for strangers with good taste to tell you where it fell short. that culture did not really have an address in ankara, where i was working. i knew the shape of it the way you know a bar you never walk into.
kyle bragger built forrst in 2010 as a side project and kept the door narrow on purpose. you needed an invite, and posts came in two flavors, code and design, each one opened for critique rather than applause. the narrowness was the whole point of the quality. by its third year it had reached about fifty thousand members and was pulling a modest monthly revenue, small but real, which for a one-person community was already a rare thing.
then the ownership started moving. colourlovers bought it in march 2012 and mostly let it sit. zurb picked it up in january 2013 with better intentions but a community had already begun to drift. on 14 april 2014 zurb closed it, archived every post so the critiques would not simply vanish, and moved on. the domain lingered as a redirect for a while before it too went dark around 2017.

~ the climb ~
what made forrst work was the same thing dribbble was figuring out at the same moment, that a feed of half-finished work is more useful than a gallery of trophies. people posted the messy middle of a project and got honest notes back. the invite wall kept the signal high, because everyone inside had been vouched for by someone who cared about the room staying good.
~ what replaced it ~
the critique-feed idea did not die with forrst, it just moved into bigger houses. dribbble kept the show-your-work loop going, github made code review the center of a career, and the general habit of posting a work-in-progress for feedback became normal everywhere. forrst proved the format at small scale and then got passed hand to hand until the people who had loved it were already somewhere else.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
paid once through stripe. payments are handled by OÜ Lakeview, the small company that keeps rip.so running. the money pays for the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
