FFFFOUND!

2007 - 2017
dead asia
ffffound was an invite-only image bookmarking site built by tha ltd in tokyo under yugo nakamura, with yosuke abe and keita kitamura on development. it launched in 2007 as a designer's private mood-board. invites stayed scarce by policy for ten years. yugo announced the closure on twitter in april 2017 and the site went dark on 15 may 2017.

~ the eulogy ~

ffffound was the kind of site you read about in a designer's twitter feed and never managed to get an invite for. that was the whole point of it. ten years of an image bookmarking platform that picked its members slowly and kept the population small enough to stay coherent. for a working graphic designer in 2010, an ffffound profile was a way to publish a private aesthetic. for everyone else, it was a wall.

the site shipped in 2007 from tha ltd, a tokyo design studio run by yugo nakamura. yosuke abe and keita kitamura built the implementation. the model was simple: bookmark an image from anywhere on the web, and a recommendation engine would surface related images other ffffound users had saved. the four f's came from a wildcard in the early test url. the exclamation mark stuck because the brand looked better with it. by december 2008 the archive had passed half a million images.

yugo nakamura announced the closure on twitter in april 2017. the site went dark on 15 may 2017, ten years and change after launch. no export tools. no public api dump. the robots.txt blocked the wayback machine from caching most of the gallery, so the archive that remains is mostly a scatter of personal screenshots and the few directories that slipped through. for a decade of design culture, almost nothing survived in a recoverable form.

~ how it landed ~

the invite gate did most of the work. ffffound stayed small because the team wanted it small. you needed an existing member to vouch for you, and existing members hoarded their invites the way a 2003 gmail user hoarded the same currency. for a designer in tokyo or brooklyn, an ffffound account placed you inside the working set of people who picked images for a living. for everyone reading from outside, the gallery was browsable but not joinable. that gradient was the brand.

~ the inheritance ~

pinterest launched a few months later in early 2010 and ran the public-image bookmarking play at a scale ffffound never wanted. tumblr was carrying the same load with a different shape. ffffound did not try to compete with either. it stayed in its lane, with its scarcity intact, for the rest of its run. the design community that lived inside it eventually rotated onto are.na and pinterest itself in the post-2017 years. the aesthetic of a 2012 ffffound profile is still recognizable in a 2026 are.na block.

~ the day it died ~

no big announcement. a tweet from yugo, then a quiet two-month wind-down. some users tried to scrape their own profiles in the window. the lack of an export feature meant most of the archives were personal mirrors only. wired and a few design blogs wrote short obituaries. by june the domain returned an empty homepage. by 2018 the dns stopped resolving. the gallery that working designers had used to teach each other for ten years left no public successor.

~ leave a wreath ~

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

paid once through stripe. payments are handled by OÜ Lakeview, the small company that keeps rip.so running. the money pays for the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
