~ the obituary ~
facebook rooms launched on 23 october 2014, iOS only, US only, as the third product to ship from facebook creative labs after paper and slingshot. josh miller ran it. he had co-founded branch, the conversation-thread startup facebook bought in january 2014 for the acqui-hire, and rooms was branch's product logic reborn under a bigger brand.
the pitch was pseudonymous topic-forums on mobile. anyone could create a room, pick colors and a header image, pick a screen name that did not have to match a real name, and invite people via a printable qr code. moderation ran on old-forum rules with a single room owner. miller kept insisting rooms was not an anonymous app. his phrase for it was pseudonymous, aim-screen-name style. the point was that identity had to be recurring inside a room even if it never leaked out of it.
i had a facebook account by 2014 but rooms was not a product that reached me. it was iOS only at launch, us-only for the qr distribution. the creative labs apps in general never got a real turkish app store push. the anonymous-social wave from that same year (secret and whisper on the app side, yik yak on campuses) also never really landed in tr in a form that stuck. my anonymous internet in 2014 was reddit tabs, not a phone app.

~ what it actually did ~
rooms borrowed its shape from small-web forums and the aim buddy list. each room had a title, an aesthetic layer of colors and fonts and header art, an invite code, and a feed of text and photos. miller cited transgender support communities and off-the-beaten-track travel recommendations as the two use cases he wanted to enable. the mental model was "many small websites" against "one big feed". that framing has aged well in 2026, even though the app itself did not.
the qr invite code was the shipping detail everyone remembered. you could print a code, tape it to a lamp post, and anyone who scanned it would land inside your room. it treated distribution as a physical-world hack instead of a social graph. this was the part of rooms that felt most like a small-team creative-labs experiment and least like a facebook product.
~ the actual end ~
the whole creative labs incubator was shut down in december 2015. facebook posted on 7 december that paper would end 29 january 2016. the other creative labs apps got their own kill notices in the same batch. rooms was the earliest of them to go dark, with a 23 december 2015 cutoff and a two-month wind-down for user data export.
parmy olson at forbes covered the batch shutdown that same week. the facebook line was that the useful pieces of the experiments would be folded into the main blue app and the standalone brands would not continue. what actually happened is that groups became the successor to almost everything rooms tried to do, several years later, without the qr-invite theatrics.
~ what got buried with it ~
josh miller left facebook in 2018 and went on to co-found the browser company of new york, which shipped arc in 2023. the creative labs playbook of small standalone apps by internal teams did not survive at facebook. the closest heirs were the facebook messenger kids launch and the later meta horizon experiments, and neither of them carried the rooms model of small pseudonymous forums into a shipped product.
the name got reused twice. facebook messenger rooms came out in april 2020 as a zoom competitor during the covid window, and facebook group rooms as a video-call feature after that. neither one shared any dna with the 2014 josh miller app. that reuse is the reason the 2014 rooms is hard to search for, and it is one reason the grave stays under-remembered.
