~ the goodbye ~
i knew the shape of this business without ever knowing this particular store. an online marketplace where lots of small sellers list their own goods, that model i understood well. Elevenia specifically was a shopping site in Jakarta, in Bahasa Indonesia, and there was no thread of my life that ran through it. it turned up for me the same way JD.ID did, as a name on a list of Southeast Asian storefronts that quietly switched off.
underneath the local name it was half Korean. Elevenia launched in March 2014 as a joint venture, split evenly between XL Axiata, one of Indonesia's big mobile carriers, and SK Planet from South Korea, the operator of Korea's 11st marketplace. the name is a straight lift from that, "elevenia" out of eleven. so this was Korea's online-mall playbook, funded by a telco and dropped into the fastest-growing shopping market in the region.
for a couple of years it worked. Elevenia climbed to roughly the third-biggest marketplace in Indonesia, carrying something like four million products from forty thousand sellers. then the war it could not win arrived. Shopee and Tokopedia were burning enormous sums on free shipping and subsidies, the kind of money only backers like Alibaba and Tencent could keep feeding. a marketplace does not win that fight by being sensible. it wins by having the deepest pockets, and a carrier joint venture did not.
XL Axiata got out first. in 2017 the carrier decided e-commerce was a cash furnace that was hurting its own numbers and sold its stake. control passed to Indonesia's Salim Group, which bought time, not a future. Elevenia kept shrinking against rivals that never stopped spending, and on the 1st of December 2022 it closed the marketplace for good and turned toward quieter business-to-business work. eight years after a Korean shopping model landed in Jakarta with a telco behind it, the storefront went dark.

~ the money-burn war ~
the thing that killed Elevenia is the thing that killed most of its neighbors. Southeast Asian e-commerce in the 2010s was not really a contest of better websites, it was a contest of who could lose money the longest to buy a customer's habit. the winners were the ones with a patient giant behind them, willing to fund years of losses on purpose. Elevenia had a mobile carrier that answered to its own shareholders every quarter, and shareholders do not fund a furnace forever. good product, wrong backers.
~ the long tail ~
the pattern is worth naming because it is not one company's bad luck. a foreign model arrives with a local partner, does well enough to look like a contender, then meets rivals who treat losses as a strategy rather than a problem. JD.ID died the same way the same year, from the other direction, a Chinese giant deciding the region was not worth the spend. Elevenia died from the domestic side, a local venture that simply ran out of appetite for the fight. the market they lost to is still there, still narrowing to a handful of names that could outspend everyone.
