~ the last words ~
i know JD.com by reputation, china's number two online retailer, the one that runs its own warehouses and delivery the way Amazon does. JD.ID i never knew at all. it was the Indonesian front of that giant, a Jakarta storefront i had no reason to open, and the first time i really looked at it was the notice that it was closing.
so this is reconstructed from the record. JD.ID launched in Indonesia late in 2015, a joint venture between JD.com and a local investor, aimed straight at the fast-growing Indonesian shopping market. it leaned on the thing JD was known for at home, its own warehouses and delivery, in a market full of fakes and slow shipping. it raised enough to be called a unicorn, valued past a billion dollars, and for a few years it looked like one of the contenders.
The problem was the competition and the math. Shopee and Tokopedia had the Indonesian market sewn up, pouring subsidies into free shipping that JD.ID had to match to stay visible. by late 2022 it ranked only tenth by traffic. it laid off nearly a third of its staff that year. and above it, in Beijing, JD.com was deciding that Southeast Asia was a money pit it no longer wanted, closing its Indonesia and Thailand operations together.
the parent did not fail. that is the part worth sitting with. JD.com is still one of the largest retailers on earth. it simply walked out of an entire region and left the local company it had built to turn off its own servers. JD.ID stopped taking orders on the 15th of February 2023 and shut down completely on the 31st of March.

~ how it actually ended ~
there was no scandal and no collapse, just a spreadsheet decision made a continent away. JD framed it as a shift toward supply-chain and logistics work abroad, which is the corporate way of saying it would rather move other people's boxes than run a store. the people who lost the most were the sellers and the staff on the ground in Jakarta, who had built a real business inside someone else's strategy.
~ the legacy ~
what JD.ID leaves is a lesson every regional e-commerce grave tells in its own accent. a foreign giant arrives with deep pockets and spends hard to buy a market, then discovers the local incumbents will spend just as hard to keep it. when the giant gets bored or the money tightens, the local site is the first thing cut, no matter how many people came to depend on it. for Indonesia it was JD.ID. the same pattern buried a row of others across Asia in the same stretch of years.
