Deutsch für dich

2013 - 2026

the goethe-institut ran a free forum for german learners anywhere in the world and kept it going for more than twelve years. on 18 february 2026 it switched off the social half, chat and messages and comments and the forum and the groups, and gave one reason: the online world is changing fast and so is the way people talk to each other. deletion of the community data began two weeks later, on the same day as two farewell calls.

~ the obit ~

The number is still on the Goethe-Institut's own website, on a page listing the communities it runs. Deutsch für dich, 670,000 Mitglieder. The page has not been updated to say that the community part of Deutsch für dich was switched off on 18 February 2026, which makes it an uncomfortable thing to read now. The members are counted. The thing they were members of is gone.

It was a free online community for people learning German, open to anyone in the world, attached to a bank of free exercises covering every level from A1 up to C2. You could register without paying and without being enrolled in a Goethe course. The social layer around the exercises was a forum, a chat, private messages, comments and groups, and those five things were what ended.

I learned my second language on the internet, which is the only reason I have any feel for what this was. But that language was English and the years were the late nineties and early two-thousands, when no institute was running a forum for me. The method was game servers and reading things a little beyond my level until they stopped being beyond it. A state-funded cultural body running a free community for learners anywhere is a kinder arrangement than the one I had, and it lasted twelve years.

Nothing in the closing notice mentions money. The Goethe-Institut spent 2024 closing physical institutes under German federal budget pressure, and it would be easy to join those dots. The notice does not join them, so this page will not either.

~ what was switched off ~

The announcement is addressed to "Liebes Mitglied" and signed by the Deutsch für dich team. The operative line: 「schalten wir die Community-Funktion zum 18.02.2026 ab」, we are switching off the community function as of 18 February 2026. The next sentence spells out what that means, which is that chat, messages, comments, forum and groups can no longer be used.

The reason given is one sentence in two halves. 「Die Online-Welt verändert sich sehr schnell」, the online world is changing very fast, then 「und damit auch unsere Art zu kommunizieren」, and with it our way of communicating. The notice then points readers at the Goethe-Institut's own social-media accounts, TikTok included, which is apparently where the way we communicate had gone.

~ the deletion schedule ~

Most shutdown notices stop at the switch-off date. This one gives a second date and says plainly what happens on it: 「Nach der Abschaltung löschen wir alle Daten aus der Community. Damit beginnen wir am 05.03.2026.」 After the shutdown we delete all data from the community, starting 5 March 2026. Twelve years of forum threads in however many languages, with a start date for their removal published in advance.

The same 5 March carried two live farewell sessions, at 10:00 and at 15:00 Central European Time, each three quarters of an hour, each free to register for. The invitation describes them as a look back over many years of Deutsch für dich and a briefing on what else the institute offers. Scheduling the goodbye on the morning the deletion starts is either very tidy or slightly brutal, and probably both.

~ what is still standing ~

The exercises were explicitly spared. 「Die Aufgaben bleiben für dich verfügbar.」 The tasks stay available to you, so you can go on practicing German for free. The German-language page today confirms the switch-off in the past tense and says a log-in is no longer possible.

On the day this was written the exercise site itself answered with HTTP 503 and a German sentence explaining that building work means no exercises can be done right now, with a link to a YouTube channel in the meantime. That is a maintenance window and not a second death, and the distinction matters enough to say out loud. The community has a date on it. The exercises just have scaffolding.
