a-lehdet announced on 2 february 2021 that it was closing demi, the finnish teen magazine it had published since 1998, and the forum at demi.fi went with it. you could not start a new thread after 8 february. the site closed on 29 march and the final printed issue came out on 8 april. for twenty-three years it was where finnish teenagers, mostly girls, asked each other the things they were not going to ask an adult. the whole archive went to the national library of finland.

Finnish teenage girls had a forum of their own for twenty-three years. That is about as far from my corner of the internet as a website can get while still being a website, and I would not have found it at all if the dead domain had not kept answering with its own closing date in the page title.

Demi started in 1998 as a print magazine from A-lehdet, aimed at teenagers and specifically at girls under twenty. By 2004 it was selling 54,500 copies and was the largest youth publication in Finland. demi.fi went up alongside it, and over the 2000s the forum became much larger than the magazine that had launched it. In 2020, the last full year it ran, the site was reaching something like 584,000 people a month in a country of five and a half million.

The forum did what a small-country teen forum does when there is only one of them. Questions about bodies and about sex, questions about being bullied, questions about not knowing whether you are a girl. Its former editor-in-chief described it afterward as a genuinely unique community for young people, especially girls and gender minorities, which is a careful way of saying there was nowhere else in Finnish for those conversations to happen.

~ the wind-down ~

A-lehdet made the announcement on 2 February 2021, citing insufficient commercial demand. The dismantling then ran on a published schedule rather than all at once. On 8 February the forum stopped accepting new threads, so the last six weeks were read-only: everything still visible, nothing new arriving. The site closed on 29 March. The last printed issue reached subscribers on 8 April, nine days after the website it had outlived for exactly no time at all.

~ what the domain says now ~

demi.fi still answers, which is unusual for a publisher shutting down a title. The page is a flat pink field with the Demi wordmark, one line of Finnish reading that Demi.fi stood in this place, 1998 to 2021, and a heading that translates to thanks for the years gone by. There is a heart below it and a copyright line for A-lehdet Oy 2021.

That page is also a better source than the press coverage. Archive Team's register dates the closure to April 2021 and notes the site vanished before 9 April. The browser tab title on the live page says Demi sulkeutui 29.3.2021, which is the publisher putting the date on its own door eleven days earlier than the secondhand record.

~ the national library ~

The forum content was deposited into the collections of the National Library of Finland. That is a far better outcome than almost anything in this archive gets, and it is worth saying plainly why: Finland has legal deposit rules covering published web material, so a commercial publisher closing a website does not automatically get to be the last word on whether it existed.

It is not browsable the way the forum was. Nobody is going to stumble into a 2006 thread from a search result. But two decades of Finnish adolescence, written down by the people having it, sits in a national collection instead of in a deleted database, and that is the difference between a closed site and an erased one.
