Darkwarez.pl

on 13 august 2018 a polish warez forum holding two and a half million registered accounts went dark in the middle of a civil case, taking its file host catshare with it. darkwarez.pl had been running since early 2006, selling premium accounts and indexing other people's links rather than storing anything itself. washington named it twice, once in a state department report on the polish investment climate and once on the outgoing obama administration's notorious markets list. the man who started it was fined in 2019 for helping other people infringe.

~ the obituary ~

A warez forum is only ever as large as the language it runs in. Darkwarez.pl ran in Polish, which capped it at one country and also made it, for twelve years, the biggest thing of its kind inside that country. The only part of it that ever crossed a border was the complaining.

It started in early 2006, first archived on 21 February of that year, built by Remigiusz Nosalik under the handle qspy. The model was the one every large forum of the period converged on. The site itself stored nothing and members posted links to files sitting elsewhere, while the forum sold premium accounts that made the whole arrangement faster. What moved through it was software and games, films and music. By the end there were around two and a half million registered accounts on a forum serving a population of thirty eight million.

The header art is the detail that stays with you. A gold Polish eagle, wings spread, in the national posture, sitting to the left of the words Twoje Centrum Downloadu, your download center. Somebody looked at a link aggregator for pirated films and reached for the coat of arms.

~ the year Washington noticed ~

In 2015 the US State Department's annual Investment Climate Statement on Poland named darkwarez.pl as the leading domestic site infringing intellectual property rights. That is an unusual place for a forum to turn up, buried in a document written for American companies deciding whether to put money into a country.

In December 2016 the outgoing Obama administration's Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets listed it again, this time on the priority tier, as a site harming the video game industry. Two US federal documents in eighteen months, aimed at a Polish message board. Neither of them closed it.

~ what actually closed it ~

A Polish civil case did, and it had nothing to do with games or films. From 2016 proceedings ground forward at the request of the owner of a pornography business, and on 13 August 2018 the forum and its associated file host catshare.net both went off the air while that case was still live. In 2019 Nosalik was convicted of aiding copyright infringement and sentenced to a fine.

~ what the domain does now ~

Curl darkwarez.pl today and you get a 403 from Cloudflare with a JavaScript challenge attached, which means somebody is still paying to keep a dead forum behind a firewall. The archive's crawl of the domain after 2019 is almost entirely Cloudflare's own tracing pixels and challenge assets. Whatever is on the other side, no crawler has seen it in years.

Poland was late to legal streaming and late to cheap legal music, in the way most of the region was, and the twelve years Darkwarez spent at the top of the country's piracy charts map almost exactly onto that gap. I never opened it, because I could not have read a word on it. A forum with two and a half million accounts on it can be completely invisible one language over.
