BluTV

2016 - 2025

blutv was the first turkish subscription streaming service, launched under doğan holding on 23 january 2016, and for a few years it was where the interesting turkish television was. discovery bought a third of it in 2021 and warner bros. discovery took the rest in december 2023. on 15 april 2025 the app stopped opening and every subscriber woke up on max instead. nothing was seized and nothing was lost. a company in another country decided its brands should all carry one name.

a turkish drama episode on broadcast television runs past two hours, and a serious portion of that running time is advertising. blutv is the first place where that stopped being true for turkish shows. you paid once a month and an episode was just an episode.

it went live on 23 january 2016 under doğan holding, built by aydın doğan yalçındağ. the launch pitch was thirty live channels and roughly ten thousand hours of on-demand video, with turkish subtitles or dubbing on everything foreign. it was the first local subscription platform in the country, arriving while netflix was still working out how serious it wanted to be about turkey.

what made it stick was not the licensed catalog. it was masum in 2017, the first thing the platform made itself, and the twenty-five originals that followed over the next seven years. these were shows that could not have been scheduled on national television here, either because of their length or because of what they were willing to say, and for a while the interesting turkish television was on a website.

i do not need to reach for distance on this one. it launched in my country, in my language, on hardware i already owned. that is also why the ending feels so small. no money vanished and no catalog was deleted. an american parent company decided that its streaming brands should all carry the same word.

~ what it commissioned ~

behzat ç. is the clearest case. it had been a police series on a national channel and it stopped in 2013 without a satisfying explanation, and blutv brought it back in 2019 with the language left in. sıfır bir arrived from the other direction, a web series shot in adana by people with no television career behind them.

this is the part that gets flattened when the platform is described as the turkish netflix. it commissioned work nobody at a broadcaster would have commissioned, at lengths nobody would have scheduled. by the end of 2023 the library ran to twenty-six originals and the subscriber count sat around 1.6 million, which in a market this size is a real business rather than a rounding error.

discovery took 35 percent in january 2021, reportedly for twenty million dollars, and put discovery+ inside the blutv app as part of the arrangement. that made the local platform the turkish delivery route for an international catalog. hbo material started showing up next to the domestic drama, which is how a subscriber in ankara ended up watching game of thrones on a doğan holding product.

warner bros. discovery completed the full purchase on 29 december 2023, terms undisclosed, with the turkish competition authority signing off that same month. deniz şaşmaz oflaz, who had taken over as chief executive from the founder eleven months earlier, said the company's steady growth was what made it worth buying. the brand had about sixteen months left at that point.

~ the fifteenth of april ~

the plan was announced on 5 december 2024 and executed on 15 april 2025. max launched in turkey and blutv stopped existing on the same morning. subscribers kept their logins and their billing, and the app they had been opening for nine years simply stopped working, so everybody had to go and install a different one.

the originals went with it, which is the part that matters. masum and behzat ç. and the rest are still watchable, now filed inside a global service alongside everything else warner owns. what disappeared was the shelf they used to sit on. a national catalog with its own name became a regional tab in somebody else's menu, and blutv.com now answers with a redirect to hbomax.com/tr.
