Atari Jaguar
~ the obit ~
the jaguar sat in the part of console history i can read about but never saw in a friend's living room. in 1993 the atari name in turkey meant the 2600 famiclones our older cousins had played, sometimes a 7800 a kid had imported. a sixty-four-bit cartridge machine nobody could afford was a different category. by the time i would have noticed a console war i was eleven and the question on our street was playstation or pc.
atari corporation launched the jaguar on november 23 1993 at $249.99, six weeks after the 3do hit shelves at $699. the marketing leaned on a single claim, that the jaguar was the world's first sixty-four-bit console, and the slogan "do the math!" did most of the work in print ads. the math itself was contested. the system used a motorola 68000 cpu and two custom thirty-two-bit coprocessors named tom and jerry. atari counted the coprocessor bus width to get to sixty-four. critics counted instruction sets and got to thirty-two.
about one hundred and twenty-five thousand units sold by end of 1995. the official library closed at sixty-three licensed games, fifty on cartridge and thirteen on the jaguar cd add-on. alien vs predator was the best-selling title at around fifty-two thousand copies. atari corporation merged with hard-drive maker jts in july 1996 and the jaguar quietly stopped shipping. hasbro picked up the patents in 1998 and released them to the public domain in 1999, which is why a small homebrew scene is still cutting new cartridges for it in 2026.

~ do the math ~
the sixty-four-bit slogan was the marketing strategy, not a slip. sega had announced saturn at thirty-two bits and sony had announced playstation at thirty-two bits. nintendo's still-secret next console would later land as the ultra 64. atari needed a number bigger than thirty-two. tom and jerry plus the 68000 could be described as sixty-four if you squinted at the bus, so atari squinted. the better business bureau's national advertising division told atari in 1994 to stop making the claim. atari ignored the order and kept running the ads until production ended.
~ the cracks ~
the controller was the first sign. the jaguar pad had three face buttons and a directional pad on top, with a twelve-button telephone keypad below the main controls for game-specific overlays. the keypad worked in approximately zero games anyone wanted to play. the d-pad was mushy. the controller was bigger than the console add-on slot it plugged into.
the developer story was the second sign. tom and jerry were two custom chips with shared memory contention. the documentation was thin and the developer support was almost absent. teams gave up. ports came in late and worse than they ran on competing platforms. by 1995 the third-party shelf was empty.
~ what got buried with it ~
the jaguar is the punchline atari gets remembered by, the marketing-without-product moment that closed the company's hardware era. hasbro releasing the patents in 1999 created a small homebrew scene that has been shipping cartridges ever since, mostly hobbyist puzzle games and shoot-em-ups, mostly sold a few hundred copies at a time. it is also the only console with a virtual-reality headset that almost shipped. the jaguar vr was demoed in 1995 and cancelled before it reached retail. that headset is now the kind of thing collectors pay thousands of dollars for when a prototype surfaces.
