Apostrophe

apostrophe was a US direct-to-consumer dermatology service founded around 2012 in oakland california as yoderm. the platform matched patients with licensed dermatologists who prescribed compounded oral and topical medications shipped from a partner pharmacy. it rebranded to apostrophe in 2019 in a positioning shift toward chronic skin conditions and a younger brand voice. hims and hers acquired the company for 190 million dollars in 2021. on march 7 2025 hims and hers announced apostrophe would close. subscriptions were canceled the same day and patient accounts lost provider access after 30 days.

~ the obituary ~

apostrophe was a US-only direct-to-consumer dermatology service i had no way to use from turkey. the whole DTC telehealth model is geographically locked to the US: state-level prescriber licensure, compounded medication shipped by mail, payment processing tied to US insurance and pharmacy benefit managers. nothing about that stack works outside the country. i was 35 the year apostrophe rebranded out of yoderm in 2019. i was 41 when hims and hers shut it down in march 2025.

this is mostly told from the hims and hers earnings call notes and the beautymatter writeup. the platform started around 2012 as yoderm, an oakland startup that matched patients with licensed dermatologists for asynchronous photo-based consults. the original pitch was access: in much of the US a derm appointment takes months to schedule and runs into deductible math, yoderm sold a flat consult fee with a fast turnaround and a compounded prescription mailed to the door.

i was not really watching this category. the rebrand to apostrophe came in 2019 with a tighter visual identity, a younger target demographic, the same underlying clinical workflow. the brand position shifted toward chronic conditions like acne and rosacea and androgenetic alopecia. compounded medication was the load-bearing product. it let apostrophe offer a custom mix of tretinoin and clindamycin and azelaic acid at concentrations that would not pass through a regular pharmacy distribution chain.

hims and hers bought apostrophe in 2021 for 190 million dollars in a mostly-stock deal. the rationale at the time was that hims had the men's tier and hers had the women's tier and apostrophe filled in the dermatology vertical without forcing a brand stretch. for the next four years apostrophe ran as a quiet subsidiary. then on march 7 2025 hims and hers announced the brand would shut down to streamline operations under the parent name. all active subscriptions were canceled the same day. accounts lost provider access after 30 days.

~ what the parent was actually doing ~

the timing of the shutdown matters. hims and hers had spent 2024 building out a compounded GLP-1 weight-loss product line ahead of the FDA shortage list lifting, which meant cash and pharmacy capacity and regulatory attention all needed to concentrate on a single category. apostrophe's dermatology compounding was a sibling product line competing for the same scarce inputs (or roughly).

the public framing was brand simplification. the operational framing was that hims and hers needed every gram of compounded-prep capacity for GLP-1 in 2025, the dermatology tier was the easier line to wind down. apostrophe customers were given a thirty-day window to migrate to the parent hims and hers brand under a different provider relationship. the patient files did not transfer cleanly across the brand boundary.

~ the postmortem ~

this is mostly told from the customer service emails that leaked into reddit threads the week of march 7. the announcement landed on a friday afternoon. subscriptions canceled immediately. provider chats closed within a few hours. patient accounts retained read-access for thirty days so customers could download their records and prescription history before the lights went out.

the public reaction was the same as every absorbed-and-killed DTC brand: angry email screenshots, redirect-everyone-to-the-parent customer service script, a quiet pivot of the apostrophe.com domain to a hims and hers landing page within forty days. the underlying dermatology workflow continued under the hims and hers banner with a different intake form and a different provider pool. the apostrophe brand was the part that died.
