Amino

2012 - 2025
dead
amino shut down without warning on 19 december 2025. the servers stopped responding and the apps stopped loading. medialab ai, which had owned the platform since january 2021, never issued a public statement. amino was originally launched in january 2012 by yin wang and ben anderson, who came up with the idea at an anime convention in boston.

~ the goodbye ~

amino was a fandom app for teens and college students. the categories were k-pop and anime first, then dozens of smaller interest pockets. i was thirty in 2012 when it launched, the wrong side of the demographic curve. the app sat outside my orbit for its whole thirteen-year run, but the death is clean enough to write down.

on or around 19 december 2025 the servers stopped responding. the ios and android apps stopped loading. the website timed out. medialab ai, which had bought the platform from the founders in january 2021, did not issue a public statement. users had to learn from each other on reddit and threads that the platform was actually dead and not just suffering another outage. there had been a lot of outages.

amino was originally launched in january 2012 by yin wang and ben anderson, two college students who came up with the idea at an anime convention in boston. their first two apps were k-pop and photography communities. the third was an anime community. by july 2016 amino had been downloaded thirteen million times. by june 2018 there were 2.5 million distinct communities on the platform. that peak was the high-water mark.

~ how it landed ~

amino's pitch was that reddit and discord were too generic for fandom. a k-pop forum on reddit is a subreddit running on reddit's threading model. on amino it was a fully themed mini-app with its own layout and chat rooms. the wrapper changed the texture of how the community felt. for teenagers raised on tumblr and fandom forums, that texture mattered more than the platform's raw feature parity with reddit.

~ the medialab era ~

medialab ai acquired amino in january 2021. medialab had been buying up neglected social properties in the same window: kik, hello, whisper, genius, the whole orphan-platform portfolio. amino's founders left. moderation degraded and server outages stretched longer. customer support stopped responding to most tickets. the platform limped on with a smaller dedicated user base who had nowhere else to go for their specific community. that limp ended on 19 december 2025.

~ what got buried with it ~

thirteen years of fandom posts, fan art, role-play threads, friend networks, and event archives went offline without a stated data-export option. communities that had spent years building shared lore inside an amino space lost the archive overnight. some had already migrated to discord servers in anticipation. most had not. the pattern of building a dedicated app per fandom rather than a thread on a general platform has not really come back in the same shape since.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

paid once through stripe. payments are handled by OÜ Lakeview, the small company that keeps rip.so running. the money pays for the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
