Altigreen

2013 - 2025

altigreen propulsion labs was a bengaluru-based commercial ev startup founded in 2013 by amitabh saran with three co-founders (shalendra gupta, lasse moklegaard, john bangura). after an early powertrain-technology phase the company pivoted to full-vehicle manufacturing of electric three-wheelers aimed at last-mile cargo. reliance industries participated in a 2022 series a alongside sixth sense ventures and accurant capital, which pushed the workforce to around 350-400 people. the malur manufacturing plant near bengaluru was scaled toward a 40000 unit annual target. hero motors was reportedly in advanced funding talks through late 2024 but in march 2025 hero acquired a 32.1 percent stake in altigreen's competitor euler motors instead. by june 2025 the malur plant had been halted, the corporate office was empty, headcount was down to 130-140 with unpaid salaries piled up and vendor arrears mounting.

~ the goodbye ~

altigreen sat in a category i had no reason to know about. commercial electric three-wheelers for indian last-mile cargo, sold to logistics fleets in bengaluru and delhi ncr for moving crates of vegetables or e-commerce parcels or courier packages from a hub to a doorstep. the closest equivalent in ankara would be a small commercial van or a motorcycle-based courier, running diesel or petrol, not electric, and definitely not three-wheeled. the auto-rickshaw shape is south asia specific. i saw altigreen the way i see most of the india startup ecosystem, through inc42 writeups after something goes wrong.

the company started in 2013. amitabh saran was the founder that most of the press quotes came from. the three co-founding names were shalendra gupta, lasse moklegaard, john bangura. the early years were quiet, focused on powertrain technology rather than a finished vehicle. by 2019 the pivot to full-vehicle manufacturing was in flight, targeting the neev cargo three-wheeler as the flagship product for last-mile logistics.

the real growth window was 2021-2022. reliance industries came in as a strategic investor. sixth sense ventures and accurant capital filled the same round. workforce reached about 350 to 400 people. the malur plant near bengaluru was being scaled with a stated target of 40000 vehicles a year. hero motors was reportedly circling for the next round through 2023 and into 2024. that round was the one that mattered.

~ how the funding broke ~

in march 2025 hero motors made its move. it acquired a 32.1 percent stake in euler motors for about ₹628 crore (roughly $72 million). euler is altigreen's closest competitor in the commercial ev three-wheeler category. the hero-euler deal effectively closed the door on the altigreen round the founders had been building the runway assumption around. no lead materialized to replace hero. the smaller existing investors were not in a position to fund another 18-24 months of manufacturing overhead on their own.

by april and may 2025 salaries had stopped landing on time. vendor payments were being deferred. the malur plant scaled production down as parts inventory ran short and suppliers stopped shipping against unpaid invoices. by june 2025 the plant was effectively halted. the corporate office in bengaluru had employees on indefinite work-from-home, which in india startup shutdown language is often the last stage before the formal wind-down.

~ what got buried with it ~

altigreen belongs to a wider indian ev startup shakeout in the 2024-2026 window. simple energy and tunwal e-motors also hit funding walls in the same period. the commercial three-wheeler segment specifically is harder than passenger two-wheelers because fleet buyers demand strong service networks and financing partnerships against thin margins on the vehicle itself. altigreen never quite got the service and financing layer to fleet-grade maturity before the money ran out. euler motors, with hero motors now backing it, inherits the space altigreen had been building toward. as of early 2026 the altigreen website still resolves, the twitter account has not posted since late 2024, the malur plant is up for asset recovery negotiations under lender pressure.
