Adobe Streamline

1989 - 2005

adobe streamline was a single-purpose mac utility that turned a scanned bitmap into vector artwork using bezier traces. it shipped at macworld san francisco in january 1989 and went through four major versions, the last in july 2001 at $199. when illustrator cs2 arrived in april 2005 with a built-in tracing tool called live trace, the standalone product had nothing left to offer and adobe quietly stopped selling it.

~ the last words ~

adobe streamline was the kind of utility you owned only if you needed exactly the thing it did, and the thing it did was take a scanned bitmap and trace it into editable vector artwork. you fed it a tiff or a pict. it followed the contiguous edges with bezier curves and produced a file you could open in illustrator. nothing else lived in the application, no drawing tools and no text engine. it was a single-purpose product that did one job and lived beside the larger drawing apps as a separate icon on the dock.

streamline debuted at macworld san francisco in january '89 as adobe's pitch to the prepress world. the use case was very specific, you had a hand-drawn logo or an old printed mark, you scanned it on a flatbed, then you ran it through streamline to get a vector copy that the printer could rescale without jaggies. by then the only realistic alternative was redrawing the entire shape inside illustrator with the pen tool, which was slow and required a careful hand. streamline did the same job in a couple of clicks. version 4.0 shipped in july '01 at $199 new, with a $69 upgrade for owners of 3.x. that was the last release.

i was finishing high school in ankara when version 4.0 came out, on a ttnet dial-up account with a 33.6 modem that still had a year to wait for adsl. the only vector tracing i had ever done was clicking around the bezier tool in a pirated copy of corel draw on a windows machine. streamline existed entirely outside that world, on a piece of hardware i did not own, for a job i was not doing. it was a tool for designers at print shops and small art departments, not for a turkish high school kid running winamp in the next window.

~ what it did ~

streamline read the bitmap. it followed contiguous regions of similar color and traced each region as a closed path. you could set the tolerance, which controlled how many anchor points the trace produced. you could set the noise threshold, which decided what counted as a speck worth ignoring. the output saved as illustrator format by default, with optional export to pict or to the aldus freehand format adobe added during the freehand competition window. that was the entire feature set. the program had no canvas to draw on. you fed in a raster and you got back a vector.

~ the next chapter ~

adobe folded the tracing engine into illustrator cs2 as live trace, which shipped april '05 with the same logic running inside the host app instead of behind a separate launcher. the standalone product went unsupported the same year. live trace itself was later renamed image trace in cs6, and it still ships inside illustrator today as a feature buried in a panel. anyone using image trace in 2026 is using a descendant of streamline's edge-detection code, even if the brand is two decades gone. nothing was ever lost in the technical sense. only the standalone icon, and the small market that needed exactly that icon and nothing more.
