Yahoo! Widgets (Konfabulator)

2003 - 2012
dead
konfabulator was a desktop widget runtime that arlo rose shipped for mac os x in february 2003, two years before apple's dashboard. yahoo bought pixoria in july 2005 and made the engine free the same day. the desktop product ended july 2012. the connected-tv branch crawled along until 2018, then yahoo killed that too.

~ the eulogy ~

Konfabulator launched February 10 2003 for Mac OS X at $24.95 and ended July 11 2012 as a free Yahoo product called Yahoo Widgets. Arlo Rose started it at a small shop called Pixoria after watching how customizable music-player skins had become on his desktop. Yahoo bought Pixoria July 25 2005 for a number nobody publicly confirmed and made the app free the same day. They kept "Konfabulator" as the engine name and pushed the consumer branding to "Yahoo Widgets."

The product was a small JavaScript runtime for desktop ornaments. The gallery shipped utility widgets like weather panels and stock tickers, plus a long tail of toys like fish tanks and rotating cubes that did nothing useful. You wrote widgets in JavaScript with an XML manifest. The gallery had thousands of entries by 2007. For two years between Konfabulator's first release and Apple's Dashboard, this was the only widget runtime on either platform that mattered.

I was on Windows XP through most of Konfabulator's Mac-only window. The product never really had a Turkish moment. When the Windows port arrived in November 2004 a lot of us tried it once and went back to looking at the taskbar. By the time Windows Vista shipped Sidebar gadgets in 2007 the case for installing Yahoo's third-party engine had thinned out, and by the 2012 shutdown nobody I knew was still running it.

~ the origin ~

The thing that made Konfabulator land on the Mac side was timing. It shipped exactly when OS X was getting its second wind and the Aqua-era look was popular, with no pre-installed Apple widget options to compete against. Arlo Rose was a known Mac designer who had done the Kaleidoscope theming engine for classic Mac OS back in the nineties. Konfabulator carried that aesthetic into OS X: glossy mini-apps that sat above the desktop and looked like they were made by someone who cared about pixel work.

Apple noticed. WWDC 2004 announced Dashboard for the upcoming Tiger release. The Konfabulator team called it sherlocked, the term Apple itself had made famous when Sherlock 3 buried Karelia Software's Watson. Apple's public answer was that widgets were an old idea going back to desk accessories on the original Mac. Konfabulator stayed on sale anyway. Dashboard launched April 29 2005 with Tiger, and Pixoria sold itself to Yahoo three months later.

~ what it became ~

After the Yahoo deal the product had a few good years. The gallery filled out while the Windows port stabilized, and OEM machines around 2007-2008 started shipping with a Yahoo Widget folder pre-loaded. The Connected TV pivot in 2010 took the engine onto smart-TV brands like Samsung and LG as the "Yahoo Widget Channel" overlay in their menus. For a couple of years your Samsung TV had a Flickr widget and a tiny news ticker running on what used to be Konfabulator.

The desktop product died first. On March 2 2012 Yahoo announced end-of-development for the desktop engine and the gallery, framing it as "refocusing on Yahoo Connected TV." The gallery closed July 11 2012. The Connected TV branch kept publishing apps until March 30 2018, then Yahoo killed that too.

~ the long tail ~

One independent developer named Ricky Romero kept a "Yahoo Widgets Restored" archive online for years after the shutdown, mirroring widget downloads and engine installers from the gallery. That mirror is the closest thing to a live museum the Konfabulator era ever got. You can install the engine on an older Mac or a Windows 7 box and watch a 2007 clock widget render correctly. The widgets that called Yahoo's web services for stock data or weather are dead. The visual toys still work.

The arc shows up ives mostly as the second answer to "who built widgets first," because Apple's Dashboard is what people remember. But Konfabulator shipped earlier than Dashboard and ran on more platforms, and that piece of the story is the one that tends to get forgotten.
