Yahoo View

2016 - 2019
dead us
yahoo view was the place hulu sent its free tier to die in public. it streamed the last five episodes of network shows for a US-only audience for almost three years. when verizon was done paying the bill it vanished without a successor.

~ the goodbye ~

yahoo view launched in august 2016. hulu had just decided its free tier no longer fit the subscription pivot, and rather than killing the free catalog outright, hulu shipped it to yahoo. the deal gave verizon a polite excuse to keep yahoo in the streaming conversation and gave hulu a place to park ads-supported video without dragging down the paid product. the site streamed the last five episodes of recent shows from the major US networks, plus a steady anime catalog that became its actual reason to exist for a lot of viewers.

peak yahoo view was a strange product. it was a website that looked like a content portal but was structurally a thin wrapper around hulu's free CDN. you watched on yahoo.com, the ads were yahoo ads, the player was hulu's. by the time anyone outside the US noticed, the geofence had already kicked them out. yahoo view was a stateside-only artifact of the moment when verizon still believed it could build a media business out of yahoo and AOL combined.

i could not have used it from ankara if i had wanted to. yahoo view sat inside a category i can read about but not personally remember: ad-supported streaming products that were US-only at the rights layer. the closest thing in my actual orbit was the broader yahoo properties going quiet one by one across 2018 and 2019, which i did notice, because by then i was paying attention to which corners of the old web were getting unplugged.

~ what really happened ~

verizon announced the shutdown in june 2019, gave a roughly two-week notice, and pulled the plug on 30 june 2019. the official line was that hulu's free tier no longer made sense given hulu's own subscription strategy and the new disney-controlled future. there was no successor. yahoo view's catalog did not migrate anywhere visible to the user. the URL stopped resolving and that was it.

the timing was clean from verizon's side. yahoo and AOL together were already on the path that would end with apollo buying the combined media unit later. yahoo view was one of dozens of small properties trimmed in that period for the same reason: too small to defend, too tied to a partner who had already moved on.

~ what remains ~

yahoo view's main legacy is the anime corner. for the three years it ran, it was a legal free way to catch up on recent network and licensed-anime episodes in the US, and several anime communities still cite the june 2019 shutdown as the moment a chunk of casual viewers got pushed toward paid services or back to piracy. the network-tv catalog was easier to replace. the anime gap was the one people noticed.

the other small inheritance is the pattern: a major streamer offloads its free tier to a struggling portal, the portal keeps it alive for a few years on partner ads, and when either side loses interest the whole thing folds without warning. peacock and tubi eventually filled that space with stronger business models. yahoo view was the awkward transitional version that nobody quite remembered to mourn.
