~ the last words ~
amateur user-uploaded adult video as a discrete category sat in the part of internet history i can read about but did not personally browse. xtube was the first site to make that category work at any scale. it launched march 12 2006 out of ontario under a small company called webnovas technologies, the same year youtube was being acquired by google for $1.65 billion. the model was the same model youtube ran, applied to a different content type with social-network features grafted on, profiles plus comments plus subscriptions, the whole web 2.0 stack.
this part you had to be inside the english-speaking western web to feel, and i was on the outer edge of it. in the broader 2006-2010 stretch i was on ttnet broadband watching a turkish university computer-engineering schedule, the adult-video-tube-site emergence registered in my orbit only as something news sites occasionally wrote about and msn messenger conversations sometimes joked about. honestly, the parent company shifts happened in the background. webnovas was acquired into manwin, which was rebranded mindgeek, which was rebranded aylo. xtube was a smaller-grade asset inside that catalog the whole time, alongside pornhub and youporn and redtube as the public-facing brands.
the shutdown came on september 5 2021. mindgeek announced it two months earlier in a short corporate notice that did not give a clear reason. either way, the broader pressure was visible. in december 2020 the new york times published an investigation into illegal content hosted on pornhub. visa and mastercard suspended payment processing across mindgeek properties almost immediately. the company began removing unverified user uploads at scale, around ten million videos came down in a single sweep. xtube was the smaller fish that got eaten first.

~ how it landed ~
honestly, the 2006-2008 window was when the youtube format itself was being copied out across every content vertical, video tutorials and indie music and corporate marketing and adult. xtube shipped first in the adult lane by months. the pre-existing adult-content business had been built around studios licensing video to subscription portals on a flat fee. ugc shifted the economics. anyone with a webcam and a webcam-and-a-credit-card became a potential earner on the platform.
the technical surface looked like a generic 2006 web 2.0 product. flash video player, hit-counter on the profile page, comment thread under the upload. in those days. by 2010 mindgeek owned it and the brand sat in a portfolio with the rest of the tube family. the ranking peaked around 2017-2018 at roughly the alexa-870 global tier, which is several million daily uniques on a content site.
~ what got buried with it ~
but the user side of xtube had a fifteen-year run of profile pages with thousands of subscribers, message threads, follow lists. the shutdown gave creators a window to download their own content. anything not downloaded by september 5 2021 was deleted on the corporate side without backup. the same data-loss pattern that hit journalspace from a different angle hit xtube users by policy choice rather than disk failure.
the broader pattern was a payment-rails-first model of content moderation. visa and mastercard pulling out of pornhub in december 2020 forced the platform to verify uploaders or lose the merchant accounts that paid the bills. mindgeek chose verify, which meant deleting the unverifiable bulk of the user-uploaded archive. xtube did not survive that math.
~ the legacy ~
the rest of the user-uploaded adult internet still exists, mostly under aylo and mindgeek-successor structures. in those days. xtube as a brand is the marker for when the payment-processor route closed the easy form of that business. the legal and verification regimes that came after, exemplified by texas hb 1181 and the eu dsa, are the formal version of what visa and mastercard did informally in 2020.
