Xobni

2006 - 2014
dead us
xobni was inbox spelled backwards. an outlook sidebar that turned your mail archive into a people index before anybody else was doing that. yahoo paid over sixty million for it in 2013 and killed it exactly one year later in a batch of "underperforming" products. the tech got welded into yahoo mail. the brand went dark.

~ the last words ~

xobni was inbox spelled backwards. adam smith and matt brezina built it in a cambridge dorm in the spring of 2006 for the y combinator summer batch, then moved the company to san francisco. the pitch was that your mail archive was already a social graph, and outlook was blind to it. xobni added a sidebar that ranked your correspondents by frequency of contact, showed you the thread history with any of them at a click, and let you search by person rather than by keyword.

the private beta launched 18 september 2007 at techcrunch 40. it stayed a paid outlook plugin for years, with xobni plus adding archive indexing and appointment search on top. mobile came later as smartr contacts. gmail got smartr inbox. yahoo bought the whole thing on 3 july 2013 for reported figures north of sixty million, welded the ranking tech into yahoo mail contact autocomplete, and then killed the standalone products in the 2 july 2014 summer cleaning batch. the anniversary framing was pointed.

this was a us enterprise software product, sold to outlook users, priced in dollars. i never touched it. i was on webmail in the 2007 window from an ankara university lab and a home ttnet line, and the closest thing to an outlook plugin in my orbit was whatever antivirus vendors were shipping. xobni lived in a different part of the internet.

~ what it actually was ~

a sidebar. that is the honest one-sentence description. everything else was inference. it read your local pst file, built its own index of every name that had ever appeared in a from or to field, and drew a panel on the right side of outlook that felt like a lightweight crm bolted onto your inbox. click a name and you saw every message you had ever exchanged, every attachment, every phone number the person had ever pasted into a signature.

the addressable market was people whose day was outlook and whose contact list was too big to remember. sales, support, consultants, executive assistants. the free version got you the sidebar; xobni plus paid for the advanced features. it was one of the last successful pieces of shrinkwrap software that also had a proper web-era brand.

~ the acquisition ~

marissa mayer had been running yahoo for about a year when the xobni deal closed. she was mid-shopping-spree, buying mail-adjacent teams to rebuild yahoo mail into something people would open on purpose. summly went the same month for a similar figure. xobni ceo jeff bonforte was made svp communications products, running mail and messenger.

the tech shipped as compose auto-suggest and people-centric search inside yahoo mail. the standalone outlook plugin stopped mattering to yahoo the moment its ranking algorithm was inside the webmail. one year later, on 2 july 2014, the standalone products got the shutdown notice. summary of the batch: yahoo shine, xobni, several smaller acquisitions, all folded or discontinued for "focus".

~ the legacy ~

the pattern of ranking correspondents by frequency, surfacing "top people you email", and letting search operate over people rather than strings is now default in gmail, outlook 365, superhuman, hey, and every ai email client shipped after 2020. xobni did not invent the idea but it was one of the first products that made it feel usable on a working professional's inbox at scale.

bonforte stayed at yahoo a few more years, then went to eero. brezina co-founded sincerely, a photo printing app that itself got acquired and shut. the actual xobni domain rerouted to yahoo contacts help pages for a while, then to nothing.
