~ the goodbye ~
windows maps was on every laptop microsoft shipped between 2015 and about 2023. i clicked its little folded-paper icon at least a hundred times by accident looking for something else in the start menu. it was one of those preinstalled tiles you never remove because uninstalling built-in apps on windows in that era was a whole powershell ritual. so it sat there, occasionally launching to a globe view of turkey with tomtom data underneath it, and i would close it and open a browser tab to google maps like everyone else.
the app itself had a real history behind the icon. it launched on 20 november 2014 as the maps preview inside windows 10 insider builds, then shipped as a preinstalled app when 10 went stable in july 2015. it was the unification project, one app to replace both the older bing maps app and whatever nokia had left over from the here maps effort on windows phone. under the hood it inherited pieces from all of them, some tile rendering and some of the here here-drive routing logic that had shipped on lumias.
the vendor situation under the map itself changed twice. microsoft's own mappoint and terraserver stack ran the earliest versions. nokia's here data took over around 2012 and stayed the base layer through the windows phone years. then in 2020 microsoft flipped the whole bing maps back end to tomtom, and windows maps went with it. same folded-paper icon on the outside, three different sets of roads underneath over the decade.
~ the chronicle ~

|---|---|
| Peak | preinstalled on every windows 10 and windows 11 install through 24H2 |
| Killed | 1 July 2025 removal from the microsoft store, non-functional from 25 june 2025 |
| Lifespan | about ten years and seven months |
| Made by | Microsoft, windows shell team |
| Killed by | the deprecation cull of built-in windows apps in the 24H2 lineup, users redirected to bing maps on the web |
~ what it was for ~
it was for looking up an address on a device where google maps did not have a native app. that was the whole niche. on xbox one and xbox series consoles it was the only mapping app that shipped in the store, so if you wanted to check a route without leaving the couch and reaching for the phone, this was the thing. it did offline maps with downloadable regions per country, turn-by-turn navigation with voice, and it worked. it was not slow. it just was not what anyone actually opened when they needed a map.
the offline download part was legitimately useful for the small crowd who used windows tablets in the field. surface pro users in enterprise contexts, plus a handful of ruggedized windows tablets used by warehouse and logistics field crews. bing maps did not have a great offline story on the web, and windows maps did, so it stayed relevant to that specific slice of users even after google maps ate every other mapping context.
~ how it ended ~
microsoft dropped it from the preinstalled set with windows 11 version 24H2 in late 2024. if you had upgraded from an older windows the app stayed on your machine, if you did a clean install of 24H2 it was already gone. that was the quiet first signal. the loud one came on 25 april 2025 when microsoft added it to the deprecated features list on learn.microsoft.com with a july 2025 end date.
the actual sequence in july was two-step. on 25 june 2025 a final microsoft store update made the app non-functional, saved routes and pins stopped working, the app opened to an empty view. on 1 july 2025 the store listing was pulled so you could no longer install it fresh. microsoft's guidance was to use bing maps on the web at bing.com/maps. no data migration, no way to export the pinned locations you had saved. if you had built up a set of navigation favorites in the app over ten years, they were gone on 25 june.
~ what remains ~
the here maps codebase that lived inside windows maps for years was the last surviving piece of nokia's mapping effort on a microsoft platform, so pulling the store listing closes out one of the longest tails of the nokia acquisition. here itself is still alive as an enterprise mapping company, tomtom is still the base data provider for bing maps on the web. what died was specifically the native-app pattern of shipping a first-party map viewer with the operating system, which every major desktop os vendor leaned into during the 2014-2018 window and which only apple still commits to on the desktop side.
