WiiConnect24

2006 - 2013
dead
wiiconnect24 was nintendo's always-on backbone for the wii. it kept the console phoning home in standby, drawing about 9.6 watts instead of 1.3, so animal crossing villagers could deliver mail at night and the forecast channel could refresh by morning. nintendo killed it on 28 june 2013 and seven channels died with it on the same day.

~ the obituary ~

the wii sat in the parents-of-friends category for me. i was 22 when it launched in november 2006, deep into a turkish CS program with a desktop pc that mattered more than any console of that era. wiiconnect24 was the part of the wii i never touched, because i never owned a wii. the friends i had who did own one were almost always single mothers with kids under ten, or first-job couples furnishing a living room.

what wiiconnect24 actually did, for the seven years it existed: it kept the console connected to nintendo's servers while the box was idle. you left the wii plugged in, the orange standby light glowing dim, and nintendo would push you weather data for the forecast channel, news headlines, mii contest entries, animal crossing letters. the console drew about 9.6 watts in that mode versus 1.3 watts in cold standby, which became the small running joke of every wii ownership thread: the console you bought for casual play turned into the console you left burning electricity for ambient updates you might never read.

the most loved use of it was animal crossing: city folk. friends could mail you in-game letters from their own consoles, the wii would buzz softly, and the next morning you would open the mailbox to find a paragraph of nonsense from someone three time zones away. that part i can read about. by the time it landed in turkey at any volume, i was already past the demographic that would have set up a wii for animal crossing letters.

~ the climb ~

wiiconnect24 launched alongside the wii in november 2006 and grew into a small ecosystem inside the console. forecast channel, news channel, everybody votes, mii contest, check mii out, nintendo channel, mario kart channel. wii speak, the 2008 microphone accessory, ran through it too. these were not games exactly. they were edges of games, little ambient features that depended on the console being awake when the household was not.

for a stretch of 2008 to 2011 the always-on layer was one of the things people pointed at when they argued the wii was a different kind of console. xbox 360 and ps3 both had online services, but neither felt like the console wanted to sit there all night doing small chores for you. in fairness, the cost was the electricity bill and a small surface of attack on a console with a single ethernet port. nobody outside the homebrew scene treated either as a serious problem.

~ the actual end ~

nintendo announced the shutdown in april 2013 with about ten weeks of warning. roughly, the date itself was a quiet one. on 28 june 2013 the service was cut and seven channels died on the same day. wii speak became a paperweight on launch. forecast channel froze on the weather pattern it had last loaded. the wii itself kept working as a disc-spinning game console for as long as you cared to keep it plugged in, but the parts that made the wii feel like a connected appliance instead of a 2006 console were gone.

~ the long tail ~

the wii kept selling refurbished and used long after 2013, and the console can still play disc games today. but the ambient layer is gone for good. there is no replacement, because there is no console in 2026 that wants to sit in your living room drawing 9.6 watts overnight to refresh a forecast widget. the wii u tried to keep the channels concept alive and the wii u eshop itself died in 2023. that model never came back.
