visceral games started in 1998 as ea redwood shores, an internal ea studio working on tiger woods golf and bond licensed games. the dead space pitch came out of an internal prototype in 2005 and shipped in october 2008 as the studio's defining title, a third-person sci-fi horror game on the alien isolation lineage. dead space 2 in 2011 and dead space 3 in 2013 followed. ea renamed the studio visceral in may 2009. battlefield hardline shipped in 2015. amy hennig joined in april 2014 to lead a star wars single-player project that was in development for three and a half years. ea closed the studio on october 17 2017 and moved the star wars project to ea vancouver, where it was later cancelled.

dead space shipped in october 2008. i was on ttnet adsl in ankara, the late tail of the university years, and deep in counter-strike rather than single-player console horror. dead space passed through my orbit only as screenshots in turkish pc gaming press. the strategic-dismemberment marketing language and the corridor-shooter alien design lived on my mental map of that year alongside far cry 2 and gears of war, even if i never finished the disc. the studio behind it was an internal ea unit in redwood city that most of us had never heard of by its real name.

ea founded ea redwood shores in 1998 as an internal team to build the tiger woods pga tour franchise. the studio also shipped james bond licensed games and the godfather licensed game in 2006. the dead space pitch came out of an internal prototype in 2005 and was greenlit on the strength of a vertical-slice demo. dead space launched on october 13 2008 to ninety-on-metacritic reviews and sold past two million copies in its first year, enough for ea to spin the studio out under its own brand in may 2009 as visceral.

the next four years were visceral's peak. dead space 2 shipped in january 2011 and sold past four million copies. dante's inferno was the divine-comedy-licensed action game in february 2010, a deliberate god-of-war competitor that critics liked more than it sold. dead space 3 in february 2013 added co-op and microtransactions, the design choices that ea pushed and that long-time dead space fans flinched at. sales softened. ea reorganized visceral that year and several lead designers left.

amy hennig joined in april 2014 after leaving naughty dog to lead a new ea star wars project, codenamed ragtag, with a story-driven single-player design in the uncharted lineage. the project was in active development for three and a half years. ea management never lined up around the linear-story direction at a moment when the industry was shifting toward live-service. ea closed visceral on october 17 2017, moved the ragtag pieces to ea vancouver, and cancelled the project in january 2019. hennig left ea in early 2018.

~ what dead space was ~

dead space was a third-person horror game set on the usg ishimura, a mining starship overrun by alien-infected necromorphs. the conceit was strategic dismemberment, where shooting enemies in the limbs was the only way to bring them down. the ui was diegetic, the hud projected as holograms from the protagonist's armor instead of overlaid on the screen. visceral built the game on a custom branch of the godfather engine. the franchise sold past seven million copies over three mainline entries.

the dead space remake landed in january 2023 from ea motive in montreal, six years after visceral was closed. it was the kind of remake that confirmed dead space could have continued as a franchise under different stewardship, with critics calling it one of the strongest horror remakes of the decade.

~ what really happened ~

the october 17 2017 closure post on ea's site framed the decision around player feedback that pointed toward "a broader experience that allows for more variety and player agency". the read inside the games press was that ea management had lost confidence in the story-driven linear single-player format at a moment when battlefront and fifa ultimate team were proving the live-service revenue ceiling inside ea. around two hundred staff lost their jobs in the closure. some moved to ea vancouver, some to other ea studios. the ragtag star wars game was reworked at ea vancouver for over a year before ea pulled the plug in january 2019.

amy hennig confirmed her departure from ea in january 2018 with the line that her star wars game was "on the shelf now". she founded skydance new media in 2019 and is still shipping single-player narrative games as of 2026.

~ what got buried with it ~

visceral was the ea studio that proved a major publisher could ship a new horror ip into a console generation that did not have one. the dead space trilogy outsold every other survival-horror release on the seventh-generation consoles outside of resident evil. the studio also proved that even a profitable single-player ip was not enough to survive the live-service pivot inside ea. the dead space remake from ea motive is the inheritance that visceral did not live to see.
