Virgin Mobile USA

2001 - 2020

virgin mobile usa was a joint venture between richard branson's virgin group and sprint, incorporated on 18 october 2001 and selling phones from the summer of 2002. it never owned a tower. it rented sprint's network and sold prepaid service to young americans at a moment when prepaid in the united states meant you had failed a credit check, and it made that arrangement look like a preference instead of a verdict. sprint bought the whole company in 2009 and closed the brand on 2 february 2020, moving what was left of the customers to boost mobile ahead of the t-mobile merger.

The pitch does not translate. Virgin Mobile USA's whole proposition was that you could carry a phone with no two-year contract and no credit check, which in the United States in 2002 was close to radical. In Turkey that sentence describes the ordinary way of owning a phone. Kontörlü hat was what everybody around me had, the contract line was the exotic option, and there was nothing here to rebel against.

It was incorporated on 18 October 2001 as a joint venture, Virgin Group's brand sitting on Sprint's network, and it started selling in the summer of 2002. Virgin held no spectrum and built no towers. The company was a marketing operation and a billing system running on top of somebody else's radios, which is what an MVNO is, and Virgin Mobile USA is the reason most Americans ever heard of the model.

The target was people between fifteen and thirty with no credit history yet. Phones were cheap and minutes were bought in advance at a convenience store. The branding did the rest. At its height the company carried around six million customers.

What Virgin sold was a reframing. American prepaid before this was called prepaid, and it meant you had failed a credit check, and the carriers treated those customers accordingly. Virgin called it pay as you go and priced it so the arithmetic worked for somebody spending twenty dollars a month.

It worked for about six years. What broke it was not a competitor but the smartphone. A device you cannot subsidize is a device an unsubsidized customer cannot afford, and the American market spent 2008 onward reorganizing itself around the iPhone and around the contract that paid for it.

In 2008 Virgin Mobile USA bought Helio for about thirty-nine million dollars in stock. Helio was the SK Telecom and EarthLink joint venture that had spent a fortune trying to sell Korean-style handsets and mobile social networking to young Americans who wanted neither. Virgin took the customers and switched the service off by late 2009.

Then it got absorbed in turn. Sprint already held a minority stake and bought the rest in 2009 at around five and a half dollars a share, and from that point Virgin Mobile USA was a brand name printed on a Sprint prepaid product rather than a company.

The ending was regulatory housekeeping. The Justice Department's condition for approving the Sprint and T-Mobile merger was that Sprint dispose of its prepaid brands, which were headed for Dish. Sprint announced in the first week of January 2020 that Virgin Mobile USA customers would be moved to Boost Mobile, and on 2 February the migration was finished.

Customers kept their numbers and their handsets and paid the same price, so from the inside it read as a logo change. An eighteen-year-old brand ended in a database update nobody was asked to consent to. The Virgin name still runs mobile networks in other countries, which makes this one of the few graves here where the corpse is only regional.
