1,113 people put up $100,348 in the spring of 2016 for a western answer to kantai collection. the game reached phones on 22 february 2023, six years and nine months after the pledges closed, and ran for thirty-one months. black chicken studios' own front page now carries two dates and a thank-you, which is more of a headstone than most crowdfunded games get.

~ the obituary ~

The Kickstarter opened on 19 April 2016 and closed a month later with $100,348 from 1,113 backers, against a $30,000 goal. The pitch was direct about what it was chasing: a Western version of the thing Kantai Collection had made enormous in Japan, warships from the Second World War rendered as young women, in an alternate history where the war ran differently.

Black Chicken Studios was not a newcomer. The same small American outfit had made Academagia, a dense wizarding-school life simulator with a cult following and a decade of expansions. Victory Belles was a turn-based strategy game, a much bigger undertaking, and it took much longer than a month of pledges implies.

It reached iOS and Android on 22 February 2023. The gap between the campaign closing and the game arriving was six years and nine months, which is long enough that a backer who pledged at twenty-two could have finished a degree and started a career waiting for it.

Long crowdfunded development is its own genre of story, and most of the famous versions end with nothing shipping. This one shipped. That is worth saying plainly before anything else, because the overwhelming majority of 2016-era game Kickstarters at this scale did not produce a downloadable product in 2023 or at any other time.

It did not, however, arrive on time into the market it had aimed at. The shipgirl genre in 2016 was a live cultural moment with an obvious gap on the Western side. By 2023 the category had been thoroughly filled by Azur Lane and its neighbors, most of them free, most of them with years of content banked. A game that set out to answer a question in 2016 landed after the answer had been settled by somebody else.

~ thirty-one months ~

The game ran from February 2023 to October 2025. The studio has not published a detailed account of why it stopped, and the homepage does not attempt one. It gives the two dates and a line thanking the fans for their support over the years.

There is one more note in the wreckage, and this is the one that stings. The developers said they would not be able to fulfill the physical Kickstarter rewards, though the digital artbook would still be made for backers who had pledged enough to earn it. Nine years after the money came in, the posters and the trinkets were formally written off, and the game they were attached to had already closed.
