~ the obituary ~
the first time i heard the verant name was on the splash screen of someone else's everquest install in an internet cafe around 2001. by then the studio had already been folded into sony online entertainment and the name was a vestigial credit. i was 17, on a 56k modem at home, and the idea of paying a monthly subscription to play a game on top of a phone-line internet bill was not a real option in turkey at the time. everquest reached me through screenshots in pc gamer turkey and through chat-room descriptions, not through a character of my own.
verant the company existed for roughly twenty months. it spun out of 989 studios in late 1998 when sony reorganized its game divisions. john smedley took the online development team with him, alongside brad mcquaid and russell shanks and about fifty-five other engineers and designers. 989 studios kept the playstation console business and verant got the online and pc tier. their mandate was to ship everquest, which was already deep in development under the 989 brand.
everquest launched march 16 1999 with the verant logo on it. it sold roughly half a million copies in the first year and held above 400,000 active subscribers through 2002. it was the first western mmorpg to cross that threshold and the one that taught the rest of the industry that the genre could sustain a real business. ultima online had proved the concept existed. everquest proved it could scale.
verant ran a second project alongside everquest called sovereign, a planned online rts that never shipped, and inherited the planetside concept that would later become an soe title. sony acquired the rest of the studio in june 2000 and merged it with the existing sony online ventures unit to form sony online entertainment. the verant brand was retired immediately. the team and the engines moved over intact.

~ what they shipped ~
everquest is the only product the verant logo appeared on at retail. that game alone is enough to keep the studio in the history of the genre. it introduced or popularized the level treadmill, the camp-pull-fight loop, the raid as endgame content, the death penalty as a serious meta-system, and the loot drop as the structural reward. world of warcraft inherited every one of these mechanics and softened them. eve online inherited the social-economic dimensions of the same design.
the technical lift was also real. norrath was a persistent 3d world built on a custom client running on directx 6 and a server backend that handled thousands of concurrent players per shard. that was non-obvious engineering in 1999 and the codebase carried the game forward through more than twenty expansions over the next two decades.
~ how it ended ~
verant did not so much die as get absorbed. sony bought the remaining equity in june 2000 and merged the team into sony online entertainment under smedley's leadership. the verant logo disappeared from new boxes by the end of that year. for the people inside the building, the day-to-day work on everquest barely changed. they kept shipping expansions on roughly the same cadence.
the rebrand mattered more outside the studio. soe used the consolidation to position itself as sony's full online publishing division and went on to launch planetside in 2003, star wars galaxies the same year, and everquest ii in 2004. the studios that grew out of soe over the next decade trace their lineage back through verant to the original 989 studios online team.
~ the long tail ~
soe itself was sold by sony in february 2015 to columbus nova investment management and renamed daybreak game company. enad global 7 bought daybreak in december 2020 for around three hundred million dollars. everquest itself is still online in 2026, running on the original norrath server infrastructure with a small but durable subscriber base.
john smedley left soe in 2015 and went on to found pixelmage games, which made hero's song before shutting down in 2017. brad mcquaid left verant in 2001 to found sigil games and design vanguard saga of heroes, then ran into the visionrealms collapse and later passed away in 2019. russell shanks stayed at sony through the soe years. the verant logo, in the meantime, sits in the corner of every original everquest box on every shelf where one still survives.
