Utterli

2007 - 2010
dead us
utterli was a phone-in audio and photo blogging service from the 2007 mobile-web moment. it started as utterz, rebranded to sound softer, then quietly went dark in may 2010. no farewell. no export tool. users came back one morning and the site was gone.

utterli was a us-coded product with a small circle of podcast-adjacent power users, and it never reached turkey in any meaningful form. i was on ttnet broadband in ankara during its peak, phone-in audio blogging was not a category that lived on this side of the atlantic. mobile data in 2008 turkey meant paying by the kilobyte, not calling a number to leave a voice post.

the product started as utterz in late 2007. you called a phone number and spoke into your handset, and the recording landed on a public page as a mobile audio blog. you could attach a photo from your camera phone. the pitch was that any phone worked, no smartphone required, no app install, no data plan. this mattered in 2007 because the iphone was three months old and most of the world was still typing on nokia keypads.

utterz rebranded to utterli in late 2008 in an attempt to soften the name and reach a wider audience. it kept the same core loop: phone in, post out, cross-post to twitter and facebook. for a brief window it was one of the earliest tools that made twitter itself feel richer, threading audio into a text-only feed.

~ the postmortem ~

by early 2010 the support forums were going stale. staff replies dried up. the site started throwing errors on upload. by past may 2010 utterli was completely offline with no farewell post, no export button, no email to affected users. people who had been storing years of audio clips found their content simply gone.

the founders never publicly explained the shutdown. the pattern fits the 2010 template: vc money ran out, servers cost money to keep running, one weekend somebody flipped the breaker. free services in 2010 were a class of companies that owed users nothing and mostly acted like it.

~ what got buried with it ~

utterli sits in the same shallow grave as odeo and the first wave of podcasting pioneers: the assumption that audio would be the next big posting format on the social web. it did not turn out that way for another decade, and by the time voice notes went mainstream on whatsapp and telegram, nobody remembered the phone-in blogs of 2008.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
