Utopia
~ the obit ~
Utopia was online for eight days. i have had test builds live longer than that, and they were not carrying anybody's money. It is the shortest life in this entire cluster of graves and the only one where the police were already inside before the launch had finished settling.
It opened on 3 february 2014, built on the Black Market Reloaded codebase by people connected to that market, which had shut itself down two months earlier because its own operator decided tor could not hide a crowd that size. Utopia was the second attempt at the same idea by roughly the same hands. The catalog went well past drugs. Firearms were listed. So were stolen bank account details and forged identity papers.
None of it was ever near me. The reason this one is worth a page is the arithmetic of the ending. Eight days is not enough time to build a customer base or the operational habits that keep an operator out of prison, and it is more than enough time to be recorded doing everything.

~ the eight days ~
Dutch officers went in as buyers almost immediately and made real purchases, mdma and cocaine, in quantities large enough to matter to a prosecutor. Firearms were bought from the listings too. There was no clever infiltration to it. The market was open for business and they were customers.
The part that changed the tempo was separate. An undercover officer was approached about a contract killing and accepted a down payment for it. Once that entered the file the case stopped being about a website selling pills, and any argument for watching quietly and building a bigger case went away.
~ the day it died ~
On 11 february 2014 the servers, which sat in germany, were taken and the hidden service went dark. Five men were arrested. Roughly 900 bitcoin were seized, worth several hundred thousand dollars at that week's rate. That is a lot of escrow for a site that had been open for a week.
The Netherlands had spent 2013 watching this category grow and had every reason to want a fast, loud result. Utopia gave them one. The site never came back and no successor market ever claimed the name.
~ what got buried with it ~
Black Market Reloaded's operator had closed his own market voluntarily in november 2013, with a public argument about anonymity not surviving scale. It was the most honest reasoning anybody in this business ever put in writing. Then the same codebase came back in february under a new name, with firearms on it and a murder-for-hire conversation inside the first week.
Whatever the earlier decision had been about, the second attempt was not a continuation of it. That is the whole story of Utopia, and it is why the useful number here is eight rather than anything financial.
