a game studio decided that fandom was a product and built an entire k-pop platform to sell it. ncsoft opened universe on 28 january 2021, ran private artist messages and its own singles label out of a subsidiary called klap, and reached 24 million downloads with nearly nine users in ten outside korea. it still lost. on 11 january 2023 ncsoft announced it was selling the platform to dear u, which belongs to sm entertainment and already ran the rival bubble, and universe stopped on 17 february.

It took five weeks for a sale to become a shutdown. NCSoft announced on 11 January 2023 that it was selling UNIVERSE, and on 17 February the app stopped. What ended there was a two-year-old attempt by a game company to be an entertainment company. NCSoft makes Lineage, which is to say it runs one of the most practiced monetization operations in the history of online games, and the pitch here was that the machinery which keeps people paying inside an MMO would work just as well on a fanbase. The app put the artist in your messages, so a subscription bought what felt like direct private contact with a performer, and the rest of the platform stacked around that: a store, a feed shaped like an old fan cafe board, exclusive variety shows, and a motion-capture studio where you could make music videos out of an idol's own recorded movement.

NCSoft spent real money on it. The company set up a subsidiary, Klap, and ran it as an actual record label, releasing something like 25 digital singles between January 2021 and August 2022 with IZ*ONE, (G)I-DLE, ATEEZ, Kang Daniel and Monsta X among the artists. It simulcast season two of MBC's Idol Radio. It staged its own concerts under the name UNI-KON, online in February 2021 and then live at the SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium in Seoul across two nights in July 2022. Forty artists had planets on the platform by the end.

The numbers were real too, which is the part that makes this one interesting. By July 2022 UNIVERSE had passed 24 million cumulative downloads and over 89 percent of its users were outside Korea, across more than 200 countries. That is a genuinely global product by any measure a game company would recognize. It was also running third, behind Dear U's Bubble and Hybe's Weverse, in a market where the artists are the supply and the agencies that own them had already started building platforms of their own.

The buyer was Dear U, an SM Entertainment company and the operator of Bubble, the product that had been beating UNIVERSE the entire time. Korean coverage framed the transaction as a 철수, a withdrawal, after a little over two years in the market. Service ended on 17 February 2023 and the users were routed toward the platform that had already won.

~ how it landed ~

The thing UNIVERSE sold best was the private message, and that is worth being precise about, because it is the mechanic the whole fandom-platform category now runs on. You subscribe per artist. Messages arrive in what looks like a one-to-one chat. The artist is writing to everyone at once and you are reading it as though they are writing to you, and the product's job is to hold that feeling steady for a monthly fee.

NCSoft layered game logic on top. Streaming an artist's track or buying from the store returned rewards, which is a loyalty loop lifted directly out of live-service game design. I work on the engineering side of computer vision, so the motion-capture studio is the piece I find hardest to look away from: a listed game company building a performance-capture pipeline, then handing the output to fans as a toy for making their own music videos.

~ the slide ~

Two of the platform's planets closed before the platform did. IZ*ONE, the project group that opened UNIVERSE on day one, ran only until 29 April 2021, because the group itself was a fixed-term project and disbanded. Oh My Girl's planet opened in April 2021 and shut in June 2022, well ahead of the service.

That is the structural problem with renting fandom. A game company owns its characters forever and can keep selling them for twenty years, while a fan platform owns nothing: every artist on it belongs to an agency, and in Korea the two largest agencies were both building platforms of their own. Korean business coverage made the point plainly, that a game company and an entertainment company are different kinds of animal, and NCSoft hit the limits of running a business on other people's talent.

~ what replaced it ~

Dear U got the users. Klap's singles are still on the streaming services under their own catalog numbers, which means the music outlived the platform that commissioned it, the same way UNIVERSE's variety shows survive as clips that people reposted. The app itself is gone and universe-official.io no longer resolves, carrying a broken-link flag on its own Wikipedia article.

Naver's V LIVE died seven weeks before UNIVERSE did, folded into Weverse on the last day of 2022. Two Korean tech companies, a portal and a game studio, both tried to own K-pop fandom as a software product, and both handed it to an entertainment company inside two months of each other.
