Ubuntu Touch

2013 - 2017

ubuntu touch was canonical's bet that the same operating system could run on a phone and a desktop with the same package manager underneath. mark shuttleworth announced it on january 2 2013. the ubuntu edge crowdfunding campaign raised $12.8m of a $32m goal in 2013, the biggest crowdfund to that point but still a failure. bq shipped the first commercial phone in february 2015. shuttleworth gave up on april 5 2017, citing lack of market interest. ubports has continued maintaining the codebase since.

~ the eulogy ~

ubuntu touch had my attention from the announcement. by january 2013 i had been on ubuntu for about seven years, was running 12.10 on a thinkpad and a small build server at home, was watching the long convergence pitch from canonical the way every other ubuntu user was. mark shuttleworth's framing was simple, ubuntu would scale from the server to the desktop to the phone with the same kernel and package manager underneath, with a different shell on top. it was the kind of bet a linux person wanted to believe.

the ubuntu edge crowdfunding campaign in august 2013 was where the first crack showed. shuttleworth asked for $32 million to build a single high-end ubuntu phone with 4gb of ram on a sapphire screen, the campaign raised $12.8 million across about 5,800 backers. it was the biggest single-product crowdfunding campaign at that point, and a failure relative to the goal. the edge phone never got built. canonical kept the touch software work going but the hardware path was unclear.

the first commercial device was the bq aquaris e4.5 ubuntu edition, a spanish-built mid-range phone shipped in europe from february 9 2015. the meizu mx4 ubuntu edition followed in may 2015 from china. bq aquaris m10 tablet in april 2016. for a brief stretch in 2015 the demo videos showing a phone docking to a monitor and becoming a full ubuntu desktop were popular on linux forums. the wider market did not care.

~ what it was ~

ubuntu touch was a stack rebuild that kept the ubuntu name. underneath was the same linux kernel and the same apt package layer the desktop used. on top was a unity 8 shell built in qt and qml with mir as the display server instead of x.org. this was the part that pulled the ubuntu touch effort into the wider abandonment of the unity 8 desktop, since the same shell was supposed to run on both. the apps were click packages, an early sandboxed format that prefigured the snap rollout.

the convergence pitch was the real product. one device plugged into a hdmi monitor with a bluetooth keyboard would shift its shell from a touch ui to a desktop ui. this was the same direction microsoft was going with continuum on windows phone, and that samsung would later ship as dex. the demo worked. the volume that would have justified the carrier negotiations and the oem partnerships never showed up.

~ the unraveling ~

canonical's pitch to carriers was that ubuntu touch would be a third option after android and ios. by 2014 the firefox os pitch was the same pitch, the sailfish pitch was the same. neither of the third options found a carrier that wanted to subsidize handsets at the volume android phones were getting. bq and meizu shipped at lower volumes, sold at the linux-curious slot, never moved into wider retail. the ecosystem question, what about whatsapp, what about instagram, was the question every alternative mobile os hit in 2014-2016, and the answer was always that the gtk-style ports of the gmail web app were not the same product.

inside canonical the parallel investment in mir as a display server was the more controversial bet. the rest of the linux desktop ecosystem went with wayland, canonical built mir alone. by 2017 the cost of maintaining mir alongside a custom shell, plus separate phone and desktop builds of the same ubuntu, was higher than canonical's revenue could justify. shuttleworth pulled the plug on april 5 2017, the announcement explicitly cited lack of market interest in convergence and a return to focus on cloud and iot.

~ the next chapter ~

the ubports project, founded by marius gripsgard in 2015, took over the codebase after canonical's withdrawal. ubports continues to ship ota updates for ubuntu touch on a small set of devices, the pinephone since 2020 and the librem 5 alongside it. the active install base is small, the community is steady. for a small linux subculture ubuntu touch is now the longest-running alternative mobile os still receiving updates.

in 2026 the convergence pitch turned out to be more right than the timing suggested. samsung dex plus the apple ipad with magic keyboard now carry the same dna shuttleworth was describing in 2013. the difference is that those features ship on top of established mobile platforms, the part canonical insisted on was that it had to be the same linux distribution on both ends, which is the part the market never asked for. ubuntu the desktop is still around and ubuntu the phone has its small community continuation. the convergence bet itself was correct in shape but wrong in vehicle.
