Twoo

~ the last words ~
twoo did not reach turkey at meaningful scale. it was a belgian-coded product built for the western european singles market, and the turkish dating-adjacent surface in 2011-2016 was a different shape. badoo had some pickup, while the local apps that mattered were never twoo. i was 27 when twoo launched in 2011 and not in the singles-app demographic by then.
the lineage was the interesting part. massive media was the ghent team behind netlog, the european social network that already has its own grave on this site. when netlog started losing the european market to facebook, the same team pivoted into twoo as a more dating-flavored discovery tool. founders lorenz bogaert and toon coppens kept the company in ghent and ran twoo as the second act.
the peak numbers were huge on paper. 181 million registered users across 200 countries by december 2016, with the product translated into 38 languages. how many of those accounts were active versus invitational-spam-induced is a real question. twoo was repeatedly accused of sending invitations to user contact lists using grey-area marketing, and a 2015 absorption of the q&a service spring.me turned a lot of dormant spring accounts into twoo accounts without explicit signup.
~ the record ~
| Born | 2011, Ghent, Belgium |
|---|---|
| Peak | 181 million registered users across 200 countries, December 2016 |
| Killed | 30 June 2022, migrated to Plenty of Fish |
| Lifespan | 11 years |
| Made by | Massive Media (Lorenz Bogaert + Toon Coppens), Ghent |
| Killed by | Match Group portfolio consolidation |
~ how it landed ~
the corporate path was fast. meetic group acquired massive media in december 2012, about a year after twoo launched. the iac side of the house, which by then owned match.com and would shortly own plenty of fish and tinder, absorbed the property in 2013. for the next decade twoo lived inside what is now match group as one of many dating brands, kept alive for the european-language traffic it was generating.
the shutdown story when it came was anti-climactic. match group does this periodically with smaller properties in the portfolio. the 30 june 2022 closure ran as a pop-up notice when users logged in, and the migration target was plenty of fish. twoo.com itself now redirects to either pof sign-up or the azar video chat app depending on what part of the flow you land on.
~ the day it died ~
the last day was 30 june 2022. users got a redirect to plenty of fish, a notice that twoo was closing, and a window to download anything they wanted to keep. massive media had already wound down most of its non-twoo properties by then. netlog had been dead since 2015. spring.me had been folded inside twoo since 2015. the ghent team itself was largely dissolved into iac's brussels operations.
what twoo marked, in retrospect, was the end of the netlog-lineage european social network arc. the ghent build started as a friendster-style web 2.0 product in 2003. it ended in 2022 as a feeder for a us-owned dating app inside an american conglomerate. that whole journey, from open european web to closed american dating consolidation, is the shape of what happened to most of the social-network web.
