~ the eulogy ~
getglue died on my phone before tv time properly inherited the tv-checkin slot. by the time the tracking-plus-social app landed under the tv time brand in 2017 i had already stopped keeping a watchlist app anyway. i am a computer engineer in ankara who watched maybe two western tv series a year with a spreadsheet-brain approach to episode order. tv-tracking as social media never grabbed me the way it grabbed the anglo-american audience it was actually built for.
the shutdown notice hit for real on 1 july 2026. whip media, the parent company, said it was ending consumer operations to focus on its enterprise metadata business. the app closes on 15 july. that is fifteen days from announcement to server-off, which is short for a product with a twenty-million-user tail.
the origin story ran through paris. antonio pinto and two partners built tvshow time as a tv-episode tracking app around 2012. an american company called whipclip that had been trying to build a legal tv-gif clip platform acquired the paris team in december 2016 and rebranded the whole thing to tv time in may 2017. that migration is the point where the modern app really begins.

| Lifespan | about 14 years |
| Killed by | Whip Media pivoting the company to enterprise AI-content-metadata product |
~ how it landed ~
tv time took the getglue mechanic and made it work on modern phones. you marked episodes as watched and the app timed your next episode. the friend list showed you what everyone else was on. episode comments were the community layer, spoiler-tagged and organized by episode number so the discussion for a season 3 finale did not leak into the season 1 pilot page. that layout was the small feature that made the community usable at scale.
by march 2018 the app was over a million daily users. it hit twenty million registered users a couple of years later. the october 2019 mediamorph acquisition folded a b2b data-licensing business into the parent, and whip media raised fifty million dollars in january 2020 on the strength of the combined product. from about 2021 the consumer app was mostly maintained as a data source for the enterprise side, which is the shape most consumer apps take when their parent company shifts.
~ the ai turn ~
the reason for shutting the app off is the parent company turning its data pipeline into an ai-metadata product for streamers. it is the same 2025 to 2026 pattern you can read across a few app deaths this year. the consumer surface stops paying for itself and the data underneath is worth more to a small number of enterprise buyers than to a big base of free users. really though. the announcement did not use those exact words but the direction was clear from the whip media press push over the last year.
this happened in a market that had already thinned out. imdb comments went dead in 2017 and letterboxd absorbed the movie-tracking side. myanimelist held its own niche in the anime layer. tv time was the last general-audience tv-checkin app at scale in 2026 and its exit leaves that whole category effectively empty (or whatever the exact size was).
~ what got buried with it ~
tv time had one small feature that people who used it are already writing memorials to. the show-completion animation, a little confetti moment when you marked the last episode of a series as watched, made the app feel warm in a way most productivity tools do not. the community threads under specific episodes were the other piece, a chronological archive of first-watch reactions to shows going back most of a decade. all of that goes off the servers on 15 july.
tv time lasted longer than [[getglue]] did, longer than miso did, longer than any tv-checkin product had a right to. [[foursquare-city-guide]] survived by pivoting to location data for enterprise, tv time is exiting by pivoting to metadata for the same. the consumer app is the piece that does not survive either exit. that is the shape of the 2020s so far.
