Tucows Downloads

1993 - 2021

tucows downloads was the shareware mirror canon. founded in 1993 in flint, michigan as 'the ultimate collection of winsock software', it grew to over thirty thousand titles distributed through a worldwide network of partner mirrors. on 21 january 2021 tucows inc shut the downloads business cleanly and handed the catalog to the internet archive for preservation.

tucows was the cow logo i hit through every shareware index in the early-2000s windows-on-ttnet era. the actual download did not come from canada or michigan. it came from a turkish mirror on a university network. two cow heads at the top of the page, file listings underneath. the rest of the shareware world used the same trick globally. a regional mirror cut the latency, the tucows brand was just the catalog.

scott swedorski started it in 1993 in flint, michigan as 'the ultimate collection of winsock software', back when getting onto the internet from a windows pc still meant trumpet winsock and a hand-typed dial-up script. the name was a homophone. two cow heads as the logo. it caught on. by the mid-90s the catalog had crossed thirty thousand titles and the partner mirror network spanned dozens of countries.

i pulled stuff from tucows mirrors all the way through the late dial-up years into early adsl. winamp, winrar, mirc, putty, getright, the icq client, audiogalaxy satellite. one stop for everything you wanted on a fresh windows install. the catalog felt like the index of what existed for windows outside the microsoft box. for a long stretch that was a real role no other site filled.

~ how it landed ~

the mirror model was the clever part. tucows did not host most of the files itself. it published a catalog of metadata: name, version, screenshot, the cow rating out of five. local mirrors carried the binaries. an isp in ankara could carry the same listings as one in seoul, served from a box on the same network as the customer. download speeds stayed reasonable even when the wider internet did not.

honestly the editorial layer was the value. anonymous tucows editors reviewed every submission by hand. one cow was bad. five cows was excellent. for a stretch of the late 90s and early 2000s that rating was the closest thing windows shareware had to a quality signal before app store reviews existed.

~ what got buried with it ~

the shutdown was the cleanest of any major shareware index. on 21 january 2021 tucows inc announced the downloads business was retiring and the catalog would move to the internet archive. no acquisition or fire sale. just a wind-down post. the company by then was a domain registrar with a side bet in mobile networks. the downloads section was a brand asset they no longer needed.

by 2021 the shareware-mirror category was dead anyway. windows users were on the microsoft store or winget on the command line. mac users had moved to homebrew or the app store. linux had its own package managers running for decades. anyone still distributing standalone installer downloads was doing it from their own site or from github releases. tucows had no role left to play.

~ what replaced it ~

the internet archive has the catalog. the tucows software library lives there now, browsable by category and decade, including legacy versions you cannot find on any current vendor site. the cow rating is preserved. older windows-95 shareware that nobody else thought to back up is still there. it is one of the cleaner brand handoffs in the late-internet graveyard. tucows the company is still alive in a different shape as a registrar.
