Torrentz.eu

2003 - 2016
dead
torrentz.eu was not a tracker. it was a search-over-trackers, the layer above thepiratebay and isohunt and demonoid that let you compare seeders across sources with one query. the operator, known only as flippy, ran it for thirteen years and then walked away on his own timing. the shutdown message asked the site's users to say goodbye, and they did.

~ the obituary ~

torrentz.eu was on my browser toolbar for most of the 2000s. i had ttnet broadband by 2006, a university room in ankara, an external drive that filled up faster than i could organize it, and torrentz was the search engine i used to compare seed counts before clicking through to the actual tracker. it was not the site i downloaded from. it was the site i decided from.

flippy launched it on 15 july 2003 as a personal project, hosted first out of finland with the.com domain, later moving to.eu after early legal pressure. the pitch was thirteen words long: search all the major torrent trackers at once, return one merged result list with seed and peer counts pulled live. no torrents were hosted. no trackers ran there. no.torrent files sat on the server. torrentz was a plain index over other people's indexes, which is why it survived so much longer than the trackers it aggregated.

by 2012 alexa put torrentz in the top two torrent-related sites in the world, second only to thepiratebay itself. isohunt fell in 2013, kickass torrents got seized in july 2016, demonoid had been in and out of the graveyard since 2007. torrentz kept working through all of it because it had nothing for a takedown request to actually take down. every time a tracker died, torrentz just stopped returning results from that tracker and picked up more from the survivors.

~ the case file ~

Born15 July 2003 as a hobbyist meta-search index
Peaksecond most popular torrent site globally in 2012 per alexa rankings
Killed5 August 2016 (voluntary shutdown, farewell message posted, no domain seizure)
Lifespanjust over thirteen years
Made byflippy (pseudonymous single operator, likely Finland-based)
Killed byvoluntary decision by the operator, days after Kickass Torrents was seized

~ how it actually worked ~

the technical shape of torrentz was deceptively simple. it maintained a crawler that pulled fresh listings from every major public tracker on a rotating schedule. queries returned a merged list of matching torrents with per-source seed and peer counts, and clicking any result took you to the actual tracker page. the merge was the value. if you were choosing between a 2gb rip on two trackers, you wanted to know which one had 400 seeders and which had 12. torrentz would tell you in one line. this is the same job that a modern package registry does when it lists mirror counts. the piracy layer had this pattern years before the legitimate software layer picked it up.

~ the day it died ~

the goodbye landed on 5 august 2016. no announcement, no fundraiser, no last-week list. the site header just changed. "torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines. torrentz will always love you. farewell." search stopped working. the domain kept resolving for weeks with only that message on it. this was three weeks after us law enforcement had seized the kickass torrents domains and named the alleged owner, but flippy never linked the two events in any public statement. it read like a private decision that just happened to fall right after a very public one.

~ the long tail ~

torrentz2.eu came online within a few days. it was not the original operator. it was a clone by someone else, initially claiming an index of about 60 million torrents pulled from cached data. torrentz2 ran for four years and then got suspended by its registrar in june 2020. a chain of copycats after that never really rebuilt the audience because by then everyone was on streaming and the torrent layer had shrunk to a smaller specialist crowd. what torrentz.eu was, the meta-index over an entire piracy ecosystem, cannot really exist in 2026 in the same shape because the ecosystem underneath is not the same shape. the two-line farewell is still one of the best product-obituaries the file-sharing era produced.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
