~ the obituary ~
Torrents.md was the BitTorrent tracker for Moldova, running from 2006 and carrying more than 270,000 registered accounts by the end. Moldova has fewer than three million people in it. Whatever the real overlap between registered accounts and living humans was, a national tracker in a country that size is not a website, it is a piece of infrastructure, and that is roughly how the people who ran it described what they had built.
On 23 December 2018 the Moldovan broadcaster TV8 reported that the site would close on the 27th. The plan was specific: the torrent data would be deleted permanently, the forum would survive at topicmd.com, and members could either keep their accounts there or ask for deletion. Everything uploaded since the site's beginning was being opened up before the lights went out.
It closed on schedule, and the closing notice is still the only thing at that address in 2026. The reason given was not a lawsuit or a raid, which is the usual way a tracker of that size ends. Interest had drained away to other platforms and the volunteers had drained away with it, so the people running it called the mission complete and stopped.

~ the farewell page ~
The goodbye is a Matrix tribute. Black background, green code wallpaper, and an asset folder named thanks_for_all holding cutouts of Neo and Trinity and a file called morpheusSarac, poor Morpheus. There is a SoundCloud player embedded in it. There is also a dog, a mascot labeled Super Grivei, which is about the most Moldovan name a cartoon dog could be given.
The text underneath is in Romanian and it is worth reading closely, because it is an unusually clear statement of what the people involved thought they were doing. They claim their community's contribution to the country entering the digital era as significant, and they say they believe they built one of the most generous online communities the country ever had. Then, in English, the last line: sharing is caring.
~ what the volunteers built ~
File sharing is the one category on this site where I was unambiguously a participant rather than an observer. The internet cafes I used in Turkey between 2002 and 2005 ran on downloaded music, and by the time I had broadband at home in 2006 the mechanics of getting a file off strangers were completely familiar to me. What I did not have was a national tracker, because Turkey is large enough that no single site ever had to be the one.
That is the part worth noticing about Torrents.md. It was not a business that failed to monetize, it was a charity that refused to try, and the farewell page names the refusal explicitly as a decision rather than an outcome. Somebody proposed the commercial model and the people running the site turned it down on the grounds that it would break the thing they had made.
~ where the forum went ~
The split at the end is the detail I keep coming back to. The torrents were deleted, permanently and on purpose, but the forum was moved to a new domain and kept running. topicmd.com is still up, still carrying Moldovan discussion threads, including a thread listing alternative trackers for everybody who had just lost theirs.
So what survived was the conversation and what died was the index. For a site whose whole legal exposure lived in the index, that was also the only half that could have survived.
