Togech

2013 - 2024

the first article was a photograph of cats curled up together, filed at six seconds past midnight on 1 march 2013. for nine years togech was the light half of togetter, written by paid professionals rather than curated by users, and in april 2022 the brand was retired into its parent under a new name. the writing stopped for good on 26 december 2024 for reasons given as 諸事情, various circumstances. the wordpress install underneath it never stopped, and answers today with all 10,331 posts intact.

Togetter's business was letting users gather scattered tweets into a readable page, and by 2013 that had become a serious thing in Japan, cited by journalists and used to archive arguments. Togech was the other register. It launched on 1 March 2013 as a site where paid writers turned Twitter's noise into short illustrated articles, aimed squarely at people killing time, and CNET's piece that June put the distinction plainly: on Togech it was professionals rather than users doing the writing.

The production arrangement was unusual enough to be worth stating. Togetter did not hire a newsroom. It contracted an editorial house called Noto to supply roughly five posts a day, with somewhere between ten and twenty percent of the output coming from the writers' own ideas instead of a brief. Monthly page views passed a million within about three months, ahead of what the company had expected, and the target for the end of that fiscal year was five.

What makes sense of the whole operation sits in that same CNET interview. Toshiaki Yoshida had built Togetter while he was working at Yahoo! JAPAN. After a stint at Bascule he incorporated the company on 30 June 2010, and by June 2013 he was running both Togetter and Togech by himself. The contract with Noto is how a one-man company also published a daily media site.

The WordPress API behind the site is still answering, which means the first post can be read off the database rather than inferred. It is dated 2013-03-01T00:00:06, titled roughly "a photo of cats curled up against each other is going around on Twitter", and three more followed it that day. Six seconds past midnight is a scheduled publish rather than somebody hitting a button, which means the cat photograph had been picked in advance to be the first thing Togech ever said.

~ the brand went before the writing did ~

Around May 2019 the site left its own domain. togech.jp stopped serving a front page and began redirecting to ch.togetter.com, where the masthead still read トゥギャッチ and the tagline still promised to bring you Twitter's talking points as news. The domain itself never served a page of its own again.

On 24 March 2022 the editorial desk posted its own notice, signed トゥギャッチ編集部. From April the content would be offered inside Togetter in a new form, and therefore, the notice said, updating within Togech itself would end. The verb covered updates rather than the service. The last article under the Togech name went out at 13:43 on 31 March 2022, an interview with somebody who had installed a row of Shinkansen seats in their house and eaten dinner in them. Six days of silence followed, and on 7 April at 12:00:59 the first post appeared under the replacement name, Togetter Original.

~ ten thousand three hundred and thirty one ~

Togetter Original lasted two years and eight months. Its closing notice went up at 18:30 on 26 December 2024, headed 更新停止, and it is the notice that identifies the thing being buried: Togetter Original, 旧トゥギャッチ, formerly Togech. The reason offered was 諸事情, various circumstances attending a change in how Togetter runs its service, which is the Japanese corporate shrug rendered in full. Four weeks later the company announced a split that the trade press tied to the cost of Twitter's API, but the December notice says none of that and neither will this page.

What is strange is how little of the machinery died. The old Togech WordPress is the same install that was serving Togetter Original, and in 2026 it is still up: the API reports 10,331 posts, 8,999 from before April 2022 and 1,332 after. Every old address still resolves, one to one, into the parent's archive. Ad slots on live Togetter pages are still named after it. A liveness check by HEAD request even returns a cheerful 200, and only a GET reveals the redirect sending every actual reader somewhere else. The publication is gone and its database is answering questions nobody is asking it.
