~ the eulogy ~
The name is 톡 and 소다, talk and soda, and its own logo wrote it in Latin letters as tocSODA, which is why half the internet spells it with a k and the brand never did. It belonged to Kyobo Book Centre, Korea's largest bookseller, and that matters, because the bookshop built this one itself rather than buying it. The footer carries Kyobo's own business registration number and its head office on Jongno.
It ran two shelves side by side. One held paid web novels and webtoons under contract. The other was 자유연재, free serialization, where anyone with an account could post chapters and find readers without signing anything. The paid shelf is what makes it legible as a business. The free shelf is what made it somewhere to go.
On 1 December 2023 the operators posted 『톡소다 - 교보eBook』 연재 서비스 통합 안내. Few shutdown notices anywhere are laid out this carefully. New titles stopped on 1 January 2024. On 29 January the next chapter of every running serial stopped arriving and the last purchase went through, and automatic top-ups canceled themselves from 1 February. Leftover Tocsoda-only credit would be converted during February. Purchased works would start migrating to their new home in July, and the service would officially end on 30 September 2024. Every date is in the notice. Only one of them turned out to be wrong.

~ the deadline it missed ~
30 September 2024 came and the site was still there. Bizhankook explained it two weeks later, on 15 October: the official end had been set for the end of September, but the work transfer was running behind, so the closing slid into December instead. The archive agrees to the week. There are full healthy captures on 14 October, 9 November, 8 December and 23 December. One caveat belongs here. The press only ever wrote that it would close at year's end, and the exact 31 December comes from an unsourced line on Korean Wikipedia. No notice survives that names a day.
It is a small thing and I find it hard to stop looking at. A company announced the day its own product would die and published the schedule nearly ten months ahead, then could not carry the books across in time to meet it.
~ what did not get moved ~
Kyobo eBook opened its integrated web novel service on 29 January 2024, and from 31 January you could no longer buy anything on Tocsoda. Purchased works were ported into your Kyobo eBook library in batches from July. Serials that were running professionally continued at the new address. Credit was converted rather than refunded, which is the normal unhappy ending for prepaid currency: you got spending power inside the same company, never money back.
Then question six of the FAQ: 「기존 톡소다를 통해 감상하신 자유연재 작품은 이관 처리 대상에서 제외됩니다.」 Works you read through free serialization are excluded from the transfer. The contracted catalog had somewhere to go because it had value on a balance sheet. The amateur shelf had no commercial reason to be moved, so it was not moved, and everything unpaid hands had written there ended when the site did.
~ what else went with it ~
창작의날씨, Kyobo's other creator platform, closed on exactly the same day. By 30 July 2024 it was carrying 14,807 works from 10,453 authors. Kyobo's stated reason for both was consolidation, tidying up its creation platforms to concentrate on similar businesses it already ran, and it held on to 북다 and 리드로그.
That same Bizhankook piece carries a headline hard to improve on: a Nobel Prize in Literature arrives and the creation platforms disappear, why. Han Kang had won it five days before it ran. The answer the piece gives for the whole category is not about writing at all, it is that everybody piled into the web novel boom and then found they had nothing much to pull readers in with and no profit waiting at the far end.
~ the zombie in december ~
The last good capture is 23 December 2024. The template is intact and the navigation still works. The front page goes on offering web novels and webtoons, and the counter beside each of them reads zero. There is no farewell banner anywhere on it, and nothing pinned to the top. The notice board behind it had 1,855 posts on it by the end, and the newest ones read as a slow catalog of subtraction: the free top-up partnership ended, then the regular events. The 완전무료관, the completely-free reading room, was wound up on 27 November 2023, four days before the shutdown notice went up.
The first capture that redirects away from the site is 20 February 2025.
