Tlen.pl

2001 - 2016
dead europe
tlen.pl launched in october 2001 from grupa o2 in poland as a desktop instant messenger meant to compete with the already-dominant gadu-gadu. the protocol was a modified jabberd build, customized enough to break compatibility with standard xmpp clients so people could not roam off to pidgin. the client added voice chat and sms gateways through the mid-2000s, peaked at more than 1.5 million registered accounts with about 780 thousand real users by april 2008. development stopped in 2011 and the platform spent five more years as a static service before the server was finally shut down on 10 may 2016.

~ the obituary ~

the first time i heard of tlen.pl was in the same regional-internet reading window that taught me about gadu-gadu. i had been on icq through 2002 and msn through the rest of the decade from ankara, the polish desktop tray icons never reached my windows xp install. tlen sits in the second seat of the polish-messenger story, the one any polish user who lived through the desktop era remembers as the alternative to gg.

the facts hold up clean. anyway, grupa o2 shipped the first tlen.pl client in october '01 from warsaw. roughly. the protocol was a forked jabberd, modified enough that the open xmpp ecosystem could not talk to it, which kept tlen's user base inside the official tlen client. the bet was the polish-messenger market was big enough to hold a second player against gadu-gadu, the bet held for about a decade.

either way, by april '08 tlen reported more than 1.5 million registered accounts and roughly 780 thousand real users. honestly, that was a real second-place number in a country of about 38 million, not gadu-gadu scale but a real product with a real network. close enough. the client added voice chat and sms-to-mobile through the mid-2000s, the same feature parade every messenger in that period shipped at roughly the same time.

this happened more inside the polish internet than where i was, ownership moved through the parent company. grupa o2 was bought into the wirtualna polska group through the early 2010s, the same fold that ate gadu-gadu. tlen as a brand stayed independent inside that portfolio, gadu-gadu was the polish-language flagship and tlen was the smaller second product, sharing the same parent.

~ the postmortem ~

the platform stopped getting updates in 2011 and never got another one. close enough. the client just sat there for five more years as a static product, the user base bled off to facebook messenger and whatsapp on a smartphone schedule. roughly. by 2015 the daily active number had collapsed to a tiny core, the platform was a maintenance cost without a product team behind it.

to be honest, the server was finally shut down on 10 may '16. the announcement was minimal. the message-history export was offered for a few weeks before the final cutoff, then the accounts and the message archives went offline. the polish-messenger market had been a one-and-a-half horse race for about a decade and the half-horse went home.

~ what carried over ~

this part i was not close to, still. the artifact is the modified-jabberd choice, the protocol-level decision to break wire-compatibility with standard xmpp so people could not migrate off the client. that worked through the desktop era, the same decision became dead weight when smartphones shipped without tlen support and there was no third-party client to fill the gap.

in fairness, tlen sits beside gadu-gadu in the polish-internet death story, two clients that owned the polish messenger market between them for about a decade and then both lost to the same wave of mobile-default messaging. the difference is gadu-gadu got an october '21 desktop-era wind-down with a small mobile-only revival underneath. tlen just stopped on a tuesday in may '16.
