~ the eulogy ~
television without pity started in late 1998 as dawsonswrap, a site that did almost nothing except mock dawson's creek at length, in posts written by people who were clearly watching it anyway. it became mighty big tv in 1999 when the founders broadened the show list. it became twop in 2002 once the snark voice had a brand around it. by the mid-2000s the site had a forum culture and a recap format long enough that people would read the recap instead of watching the episode.
nbcuniversal bought it in march 2007 and folded it under bravo. the founders walked out about a year later. the site limped through six years of corporate ownership without a clear product direction. nbc shut it on april 4 2014 and let the forums run until may 31. tribune media later picked up the rights and announced a 2017 relaunch that it also quietly cancelled.
i did not read twop from turkey at the time. the shows it covered were us cable shows i either could not see or did not care about, and the long-form recap-as-essay format it built did not have a turkish-language equivalent. by the time i found the format, it had already been pulled forward through the youtube video-essay pipeline, ten years downstream and styled differently.

~ what it actually was ~
twop recaps were not summaries. they were episode-length scripts that translated each scene into the recapper's voice, with cuts and asides written in the cadence of someone reading the show against itself. the site invented the convention of grading the episode after recapping it. it invented the convention of giving every show its own forum thread that ran longer than the show did.
for about six years the site was the cultural reference point for how to write about a tv show on the internet. recappers like jacob clifton and heather anne hogan became names you could find by show, not by site. several of them later moved to vulture or other outlets that paid better.
~ the funny part ~
nbc bought a site whose entire job was to make fun of tv, including a lot of nbc's tv. the acquisition was a category collision in slow motion. the twop brand assumed bravo wanted the snark; bravo assumed the brand wanted scale. neither party got what they expected, and after the founders left in 2008 there was nobody left who had a clear vision for what the new corporate twop was supposed to be.
~ what got buried with it ~
the twop forums were a self-contained internet culture. people had usernames they had used for a decade. there were ongoing in-jokes about specific shows that predated half the cast members. when nbc pulled the plug, brilliantbutcancelled mirrored the recap archive until june 2021, and then that mirror also went down. the forums themselves were never archived. the recap genre survived through tumblr and then through reddit fan-subs, but the central twop forum culture did not come with it.
