javier milei opened the 2024 legislative session on 1 march by announcing he was closing a seventy-eight-year-old news agency, which he described as kirchnerist propaganda. within two days telam.com.ar answered with a notice saying the page was being rebuilt, under the national shield, and the wire stopped moving. fences went up around the buenos aires newsroom and some 780 staff were sent home on pay. decree 548, published on 1 july 2024, rewrote the company's purpose from journalism to advertising, so the agency perón founded in 1945 now exists to place government ads.

Télam was set up on 14 April 1945 as Telenoticiosa Americana, an Argentine wire built so that the country's newspapers would not have to take their picture of the region from Associated Press and United Press. It outlasted the government that created it and every government Argentina had after that, which for a state-owned agency is the whole trick. By 2024 it was running bureaus across the provinces for around 300 subscribing outlets, with something close to 780 people on the payroll.

On 1 March 2024, in the speech opening the legislative session, Javier Milei told Congress he was shutting it down and called it a Kirchnerist propaganda agency with a deficit to match. There was no wind-down period. Over the following forty-eight hours the site went dark and the wire stopped moving, taking the photo service and the archive with it, all at once rather than in stages.

Anyone who typed telam.com.ar that Monday got a notice saying the page was being rebuilt, set under the national shield. The newsroom at Bolívar 531 was ringed at midnight with the metal fencing Buenos Aires uses for demonstrations, with the night shift still inside, and the staff were put on a seven-day leave that turned out to have no end date. Appeals from the press workers' federation were rejected over the following months, and the provincial bureaus were ordered closed in May.

The legal end came on 1 July 2024 with decree 548, published in the official gazette. It converted Télam Sociedad del Estado into Agencia de Publicidad del Estado Sociedad Anónima Unipersonal and struck journalism out of the company's stated purpose, leaving advertising and propaganda in its place. The corporate entity survived. The thing it was for did not.

~ what a state wire is ~

A national news agency is infrastructure before it is journalism. It keeps a photographer in a province where no commercial outlet can afford one, and hands the small papers copy they could never produce for themselves. That also makes it permanently accusable. Whoever is out of power can point at the wire and say it is the government talking, and often enough they have a case.

Turkey has had the same arrangement since Anadolu Ajansı was founded in Ankara in 1920, during the war, before the republic it would go on to report. Growing up with a state agency in the news supply teaches you what the argument sounds like from both sides, and it also teaches you that the argument is normally about editorial control. Argentina's ended on a different axis entirely. The editorial line was never the instrument here. The building was fenced and the wire was switched off.

~ what disappeared with the site ~

Télam's archive covered every Argentine decade since 1945 in text and photographs, including years when the state agency's own record is one of the few continuous accounts that exists. When telam.com.ar stopped resolving, the public path into that archive went with it. Any Argentine article of the last thirty years that sourced a Télam photograph or linked a Télam cable now points at nothing.

The domain still does not resolve today. Whatever survives of the collection sits inside a state advertising company under a different name.

~ the part that kept working ~

Reporting from December 2024 found that roughly 230 people were still employed there, still producing text, with the output circulating inside the structures of the state rather than out to the public. That is the shape of what Milei kept. The costly, visible half of the agency was closed under a press-freedom argument that ran for months in the newspapers, and the half that writes copy for the government carried on quietly under a new company name.
