The whole life of this game fits inside one stretch of the pandemic, which is a period i spent doing computer vision work in Ankara and buying no consoles. Super Mario Bros. 35 arrived on 1 October 2020 and was gone on 1 April 2021, and i want to be clear that i am reconstructing it rather than remembering it. What draws me to it has nothing to do with Mario. It is that a company shipped a product with the shutdown date already on the box.

The concept came from Arika, the studio that had made Tetris 99 for Nintendo the year before and had started work on this one in February 2019, before Tetris 99 was even out. The formula transferred cleanly. Thirty five players each run through the levels of the 1985 Super Mario Bros. at the same time, in separate instances, and every enemy you stomp gets fired into somebody else's game. You picked who to send them to from four targeting options, or let the game pick. The clock counted down and beating enemies bought you seconds.

The rest was scaffolding around that one idea. Coins collected during a run could be spent on an item roulette, so power-ups were a gamble rather than a pickup. Players voted at the start of each match for a level to begin on, and after the first one you could only vote for levels you had personally cleared, which quietly rewarded people who had put hours in. Luigi was unlockable. It was free if you were paying for Nintendo Switch Online, which is a sentence that has done a lot of heavy lifting for Nintendo since 2018.

Critics landed at 75 on Metacritic across 28 reviews, praising the idea and getting bored of the execution, which is a fair summary of a game with one level set and one loop. GameSpot liked the competitive twist. Others noted that thirty five people playing the same four worlds over and over is a short experience wearing a long-tail format.

~ the funny part ~

Nintendo announced the shutdown before the launch. The entire 35th anniversary lineup, this game plus a limited-run Super Mario 3D All-Stars, was sold as available only until 31 March 2021, and the company held to it exactly. There was no revenue collapse and no player exodus behind it. The date was the product decision.

Doug Bowser, then head of Nintendo of America, explained afterward that the anniversary was meant to be a celebration with a beginning and an end, and that he considered the run a success. That is an honest answer and also an unusual one, because almost every other game in this graveyard died of something. This one died of arriving on time.

~ the postmortem ~

Downloads stopped on 31 March 2021 and the servers were switched off on 1 April. The game required them for everything, so what was left on the console was an icon. Anyone who had installed it kept a shortcut to an error message.

Nothing replaced it. Tetris 99 is still running and still free with a Switch Online subscription, so the format survived and the Mario version of it did not, which reads less like a judgment on the game than a note about which anniversary happened to be attached. There is no legal way to play Super Mario Bros. 35 now, and there will not be one, because a game about thirty five simultaneous strangers has nothing to offer a single player.
