Steam for Chromebooks
~ the obituary ~
i missed steam for chromebooks. it was a four-year beta on hardware i did not own and an OS i never ran as a primary. by 2022 my desktop was a normal x86 linux box with a windows partition for the few games that actually wanted it. chromeos gaming was not a category i was paying attention to.
the project was internally codenamed borealis. it shipped on the chromeos dev channel in march 2022, moved to the beta channel that november, and quietly stayed there. the technical idea was reasonable, a chromebook running the steam client inside a linux container with valve's proton compatibility layer translating windows games to something the linux side could execute. higher-end chromebooks with intel processors plus integrated graphics were the supported targets, a small slice of the larger chromeos install base.
the verified-playable list at peak listed about 99 games, mostly older titles or 2d indies. anything with a modern 3d engine ran badly or did not launch. the beta took four years and never graduated, which is a long time for google to keep a labs-shaped project on a back burner. in fairness, the experiment shipped before steam deck existed, in a window where the hardware question still felt open.
on 1 january 2026 google ended the beta. installed games stopped launching and the client stopped opening. anyway, the official line was that the future of chromeos gaming would be cloud gaming via geforce now plus the android play store. valve did not say much publicly about it. the experiment ended where it had spent the entire four years, in beta.
~ the case file ~
| Born | march 2022 alpha on the chromeos dev channel, beta november 2022 |
|---|---|
| Peak | november 2022 with broader hardware rollout, about 99 verified-playable games |
| Killed | 1 january 2026, just under four years from alpha |
| Lifespan | about 46 months in beta |
| Made by | google chromeos team with valve, internal codename borealis |
| Killed by | low-power chromebook hardware and the rise of cloud gaming |
~ what it was ~
borealis was an attempt at a third path for chromebook gaming. the older paths were the web browser, which had given up on heavy games years before, and the android play store, which had a lot of mobile titles but not the steam library. borealis was supposed to be a real steam client running locally on a chromebook, with proton doing the translation.
the technical execution was actually reasonable. proton on chromeos worked. the steam client launched. the limit was not the software, it was the hardware underneath. most chromebooks ship with low-tdp intel chips plus integrated graphics that were never designed for running discrete-gpu pc games. even the higher-end models that supported borealis were closer to a basic gaming laptop from 2015 than to anything resembling a steam deck.
~ what killed it ~
the verified list capped at about 99 titles. it stayed small because the games that ran well were the games that did not need a real gpu, and the games that needed a real gpu were what most steam users actually wanted to play. the experiment had a ceiling baked in from day one, and four years did not move the ceiling.
the broader chromeos gaming pitch shifted to streaming. geforce now and xbox cloud gaming both run inside the chrome browser, which means a $300 chromebook can play cyberpunk if you have a strong network connection. the local-pc-gaming story turned into a cloud-gaming story, and google decided the borealis path was no longer worth maintaining. the killedbygoogle entry now reads 2022 to 2026, beta to retired without an intermediate step.
