Spy Magazine
~ the last words ~
spy magazine never reached turkey at meaningful scale. it was a 1986 manhattan project printed on glossy stock for a small east coast media audience that read it on the subway and in cafes near the magazine's own offices. i learned about spy decades later, from the wikipedia article that explained where the phrase "short-fingered vulgarian" came from in the middle of a 2016 us political news cycle.
kurt andersen and graydon carter founded spy in october 1986 with money from a small group of investors. the formula was satire that did the homework. a long article in spy would have a fact-checking footprint heavier than what the new yorker ran. it specialized in features like "separated at birth" pairing two famous faces on a single page, and "the spy 100" indexes ranking the worst people in new york by various metrics. it had the staff cartoonist culture of the period and the willingness to print phone numbers of celebrities they were after.
the trump piece ran in the february 1988 issue. graydon carter coined the phrase "short-fingered vulgarian" in a profile of the manhattan real estate developer. trump took the line personally and was still sending carter envelopes with photos of his hands and gold-pen circles around the fingers as late as the early 2010s. the phrase became the magazine's most-cited cultural artifact and outlived its print run by twenty years.
~ the record ~
| Born | October 1986 in Manhattan with Kurt Andersen and Graydon Carter as founding editors |
|---|---|
| Peak | Late 1980s with the Separated at Birth and Spy 100 features running |
| Killed | March 1998 final issue after the second-run revival under Sussex Publishers |
| Lifespan | About 12 years across two ownership periods |
| Made by | Spy Publishing Partners, then Sussex Publishers after the 1994 revival |
| Killed by | Advertising economics and the late-90s satire-magazine market |
~ the funny part ~
spy ran into financial trouble in the early 1990s, suspended publication in early 1994, and was bought by sussex publishers later that year. the second run started with the july-august 1994 issue and lasted until march 1998. the bones of the magazine had drifted by then. the satire had to fight against an internet that did the same kind of celebrity mockery faster and for free. the joke arbitrage that spy lived on was no longer worth a paper magazine subscription.
~ the legacy ~
the andersen-carter era of spy is the part that gets studied. graydon carter went on to edit vanity fair from 1992 to 2017. kurt andersen wrote novels and hosted public radio. the spy archive is partially available on the internet archive and on a handful of fan-maintained sites. the phrase "short-fingered vulgarian" is the only thing most people under fifty know about the magazine in 2026, which is also approximately the line spy itself would have written about itself.
