Sony Media Go

2009 - 2017
dead
sony's answer to itunes for anyone locked into the sony hardware world. it moved music and video onto the psp, the vita, the walkman, the xperia, all from one windows library. sony announced the end in december 2017 and told everyone to install music center for pc, which now only speaks to walkmans.

~ the goodbye ~

Sony Media Go shipped on 17 March 2009 out of Sony Creative Software. It was Sony's attempt to have one Windows program that could talk to every Sony thing you owned: the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation Vita when that arrived, the Walkman line, the short-lived Sony Tablet, and later the Xperia phones. If you plugged any of them into a PC with a USB cable, Media Go was supposed to be the layer that copied MP3s, videos, podcasts and photos across, ripped CDs with Gracenote metadata, and pushed you into the PlayStation Store or the mora music store depending on region.

The pitch was iTunes for Sony people. That is what it was and that is why it existed. Sony had never been able to convince its device buyers to run iTunes for their non-Apple hardware, and every device division had its own sync utility, so Media Go was the consolidation move. Ownership drifted across the years: Sony Creative Software launched it, Sony Network Entertainment International took it in 2010, then Sony Interactive Entertainment ended up holding the bag in 2016 when Sony reorganized around gaming.

The 2017 announcement was blunt. Media Go would be discontinued. If you cared about Walkman sync, install Music Center for PC. If you were using it for PSP or Vita transfers, the software still worked on your machine but Sony would not support it and could not promise the store integrations would keep functioning. The download page went dark. Users who reinstalled Windows after that lost the installer unless they had cached it themselves.

~ what it was really for ~

Media Go was the ghost of Sony Connect. Sony Connect was the ATRAC music store Sony ran from 2004 to 2008 to try to keep MP3 players and Walkmans in a walled garden against iTunes. When Connect died, Sony still needed a client for the devices, and Media Go inherited that job. That is why it spoke ATRAC and DSD and FLAC and PS3 video formats all at once. It was carrying the debris of a decade of Sony format wars.

~ how it ended ~

Music Center for PC arrived as the replacement, but Music Center is a smaller, cleaner Walkman-only tool. It does not touch PSP or Vita content management. So the shutdown was really two shutdowns wrapped in one: the end of a unified Sony sync client, and the quiet admission that PSP and Vita content pipelines were now unsupported legacy. The Internet Archive keeps a copy of the last Media Go installer for anyone still running a PSP in 2026.

i had a psp in the mid-2000s in ankara and remember the media manager era from the other side, on nokia phones and later on windows via nokia pc suite. sony's software layer was always the thing sony users complained about, not the thing they praised. media go was better than the tools it replaced and worse than everyone wanted it to be, and then it was gone.
