Sonique

dead us
sonique was the other winamp. mediascience built it in bozeman montana, lycos bought the company for thirty-eight million dollars in 1999, and the final 1.96 release shipped in march 2002 after the dot-com collapse ended the dev team. sonique 2 was almost ready when the layoffs hit and never made it to release.

~ the goodbye ~

sonique debuted in january 1998 as the second skinned mp3 player anyone took seriously. the team called itself night55 and came out of montana state university with a 20-band graphic equalizer, an audio decoding engine called audioenlightenment, and a player skin that looked like a piece of curved metallic hardware floating on the desktop. mediascience incorporated in bozeman a few months later, lycos bought the company for thirty-eight million dollars in 1999, and the dot-com bubble kept the cycle going through 2001.

the final release was version 1.96 in march 2002. terra networks had acquired lycos the previous year and the cost-cutting that followed the bubble collapse dismissed most of the sonique team before the long-rumored sonique 2 could ship. the project was meant to be a full music platform, with library management and streaming integration, and screenshots circulated on forums for years after. it never made general availability.

i used sonique. it was on every desktop at my university computer lab in ankara around 2004 along with winamp and a license-cracked copy of musicmatch, and the choice came down to which skin you liked. i remember the spiral visualization that hooked into the audio fft. by then sonique was already two years dead at the developer level, but the 1.96 build kept running fine on windows xp and nobody minded that no update would ever come. the installer floated around download sites for the rest of the decade.

~ what made it look different ~

winamp looked like a hi-fi rack. sonique looked like something out of a chrome-era industrial-design portfolio, with curved panels and skin layers you could swap independently. the player window did not pretend to be a piece of physical equipment. it pretended to be a piece of software from ten years in the future, and for a while in 1999 that was the more interesting bet to take.

the visualization engine was where sonique pulled ahead specifically. it shipped fft-driven plugins that responded to the music in ways winamp's bundled visualizations did not match until milkdrop arrived. people kept the player open just to watch the visualizer with a song they already knew.

~ the lycos deal ~

the 1999 acquisition was a classic late-bubble move. lycos was buying anything that looked like it might pull users into a portal. thirty-eight million dollars for a four-person mp3 player team in bozeman was a price that made sense only if you believed the lycos portal would still be the front page of the consumer internet in 2003. it was not. terra networks bought lycos in 2000, the dot-com collapse hit in 2001, and by march 2002 the sonique team was being shown the door alongside whatever was left of the lycos search products division.

the sonique 2 beta that leaked years later was the thing that got fans angry. the music-platform pitch was real. there was a working library and a working skin engine. it just got caught in the wrong quarter of the wrong fiscal year.

~ what remains ~

foobar2000 and aimp inherited some of the skinning culture but treated it as a feature rather than the identity. modern players are mostly stream clients now, with libraries that belong to spotify rather than the user's hard drive. the idea of a local-files audio player that you customized to your taste with a skin you downloaded from a fan site does not have a 2026 equivalent, because the underlying need (organizing your own mp3 collection) is not a common activity anymore.

the sonique installer still works under windows compatibility mode if you go looking for it. the visualizations still respond to whatever you feed them. you can run a copy in 2026 and it will play your mp3 files exactly the way it did in 2001, which is not nothing.
