~ the goodbye ~
sohu weibo lived inside the chinese-language internet and never had a global mirror. i was in ankara through its whole run, doing my computer engineering coursework and reading rss on ttnet broadband. china's four-portal microblog race was a story i followed the same way anyone followed foreign platform news at the time: from a distance, in english tech press, as a curiosity about parallel evolution.
the timeline is tight. sina weibo launched in august 2009 and got a head start. tencent, netease and sohu each shipped their own weibo in early 2010 trying to catch the wave. sohu weibo went into public beta on 7 april 2010. by july 9 through 12 the regulator ordered it suspended alongside netease weibo. the official reason was that the beta versions had not gone through the required content review. when they came back online they were fully licensed and fully monitored.
the four-way race lasted about eighteen months. sina had the celebrities and the media accounts, and that was enough to win the network effect. tencent had qq to piggyback on. netease and sohu had portals nobody logged into for chat. by 2012 sina had roughly 500 million registered accounts and the other three combined were a rounding error.

~ the decline ~
in 2013 the chinese government launched the big v crackdown, targeting the most-followed accounts on weibo for what it called rumor-mongering. the campaign hit sina hardest because that was where the influencers lived, but it also destroyed whatever growth story the smaller weibos still had. if sina was becoming a risk, sohu weibo was becoming pointless.
by late 2014 the portal weibos had quietly drained. sohu never announced a clean shutdown. it just stopped being a place people posted. sohu the company pivoted its social attention to video and news, and t.sohu.com was left to rot as a login-required shell.
~ what replaced it ~
tencent weibo hung on until september 2020 when tencent formally killed it. netease weibo shut down in november 2014 after the same slow fade. sina weibo won the war and turned into simply weibo, the platform that survived every crackdown by moving early and moving hard on compliance. sohu weibo is the least-remembered of the four, a good marker for the china-internet pattern where four portals can enter a category and only one comes out.
~ the funny part ~
during the 2011 peak, sohu weibo employed roughly 200 people on its microblog team according to internal reporting later leaked to chinese tech blogs. by 2015 that team was reassigned, laid off or moved to sohu video. the microblog product outlived its team by only a year or two, coasting on nobody's attention.
