Rupture

2006 - 2009

shawn fanning's second act, built for a game i never played. rupture watched your world of warcraft characters and pushed the profiles out to a social layer around the game. ea bought it for thirty million in 2008, then folded fanning and his whole team into a layoff round a year later. the site redirected to ea.com and the napster guy walked off to start path.

~ the obituary ~

Rupture was Shawn Fanning's move after Napster, and it was built for a game I was never inside. Founded in 2006 with Jon Baudanza, it did one clever thing: it read your World of Warcraft characters automatically and published their profiles to a shared social space, so the friendships that lived in the game could have a home outside it.

My multiplayer years ran on Ultima Online private shards, not Azeroth, so the world Rupture was built to wrap around was one I only knew from the outside. That is the honest distance here. It solved a real problem for millions of WoW players, and I was not one of them.

Electronic Arts bought the parent company, ThreeSF, in 2008 for thirty million dollars, which finally handed Fanning the payday Napster never had. It did not last. A November 2009 round of layoffs at EA swept up Fanning and his entire Rupture team, the site quietly began redirecting to EA.com, and the whole thing was over inside eighteen months of the acquisition.

~ the funny part ~

Fanning got laid off from his own acquired company and immediately started a better-remembered one. Within months he was building Path with Dave Morin, who left a senior role at Facebook to run it. Rupture was the bridge nobody talks about, the thing that got Fanning back in the room right before the mobile social wave.

~ what got buried with it ~

The idea was ahead of its buyer. Auto-syncing your game identity into a social profile is now just how platforms like Steam and Discord behave. Rupture had it early and specific to one game, then vanished into a large publisher that had no idea what to do with it and eventually did nothing at all.
