Redbox Instant

2013 - 2014
dead us
redbox instant was verizon and outerwall's shared attempt to build a netflix competitor. it launched on 14 march 2013 at 8 dollars a month for unlimited streaming plus four monthly disc rentals from the redbox kiosks. the catalog stayed small. new signups were suspended in mid 2014 after credit-card fraudsters started using it to test stolen numbers, and the service went dark on 7 october 2014.

~ the goodbye ~

redbox itself was a us supermarket-vestibule dvd-rental kiosk chain i never saw. its streaming spinoff was smaller in every way and dead in 19 months. in 2013 my streaming stack in ankara was a shared us netflix account routed through an unblock-us dns and turkish tt-vod for local content. redbox instant was not on any list.

verizon communications announced the joint venture with outerwall in february 2012, taking 65 percent of the vehicle with the redbox parent taking 35. the branding was ugly on paper but obvious in strategy: verizon needed a video subscription to sell against its fios wireline base, outerwall had a kiosk footprint at every walmart and cvs and needed a streaming angle to survive the disc-decline curve. the service launched publicly on 14 march 2013 after a december 2012 beta.

the price point was 8 dollars a month, matching netflix. the disc-rental sweetener was four physical rentals a month included with the subscription, which was a genuine differentiator if you lived within walking distance of a redbox kiosk. the streaming catalog was the problem. the licensing team could not close the deals verizon and outerwall had assumed on paper. the epix output deal came in but netflix already had one. the disney and paramount slots never opened.

in mid 2014 credit-card fraud operators discovered that the redbox instant signup form was a convenient way to test stolen card numbers against a real charging endpoint. the service turned off new signups in june to stop the abuse. the same shutdown of the signup path also cut off any real growth. by september the two parents had done the math. on 7 october 2014 at 11:59 pm pacific the streams stopped. subscribers got a refund and a coupon.

~ the netflix wall ~

by early 2013 netflix had eight years of subscription streaming behind it. it had already renegotiated most of its studio contracts with the leverage that comes from being the buyer everyone knew about. anyone launching a rival that year was implicitly asking the studios to fragment their own leverage against netflix. that only worked if the rival came with a plan to get to netflix's scale. neither verizon nor outerwall had one. the fios subscriber list was going to sit at the low tens of millions. that was the ceiling.

~ what the joint venture proved ~

that carrier-plus-retailer partnerships in video-on-demand do not scale better than pure-play streamers just because the two participants have a lot of customers each. verizon later took another swing at content with the aol acquisition in 2015 and the yahoo one in 2017. both ended up folded into apollo in 2021. outerwall itself went private in 2016 and eventually spun redbox out to a spac. the redbox kiosk business followed the whole company into chapter 7 in july 2024.

~ the fraud tail ~

the credit-card testing story is a small piece of a larger pattern from the same period. any new signup form on a US billing endpoint became a target during 2014 as breaches of retailer databases dumped tens of millions of numbers onto forums. redbox instant was not the only service hit, only the one where the fraud volume was structurally fatal for a company already close to the exit. the shutdown notice did not name fraud as the reason but the deadline pattern lined up cleanly.
