~ the eulogy ~
phhhoto was the kind of app younger people in new york and los angeles used, and i was neither younger nor in either place. by 2014 i was a computer engineer in my thirties in ankara, not the crowd chasing a new looping-selfie app on iphone. to be honest. i met the format before i met the name, because the little jittery back-and-forth loop was everywhere for a while, mostly through the instagram clone of it.
phhhoto launched in july 2014 as an iphone app. you held the button, it grabbed five frames in a burst, and it stitched them into a loop that bounced forward and back. it caught on quickly and reached roughly 10 million users, with about 1.3 million opening it every day by 2016. for a small brooklyn team that was real traction.
then its biggest platform turned on it. in april 2015 instagram cut phhhoto off from the friend-finding graph, and that october it launched boomerang, the same looping idea under facebook's roof. when instagram switched to an algorithmic feed in march 2016, phhhoto's visibility fell and its app-store rank dropped fast. the company closed in june 2017, and in 2021 it sued meta for copying the feature and starving it of oxygen.

~ the unraveling ~
the failure was not about the product being weak. the loop worked and people liked it. the crack was structural, phhhoto lived on instagram's social graph for discovery, and the moment instagram decided to compete instead of cooperate, that dependency became the whole story. you cannot out-run the platform you are standing on when it owns the ground.
~ what it became ~
phhhoto's real afterlife is the lawsuit. the app is gone, but the antitrust case became one of the clearer public accounts of how a small maker gets absorbed, and it kept surviving meta's motions to dismiss into 2026. the loop format itself did not die either, it just moved into boomerang and became a normal button inside instagram. the people who made it first got a court docket instead of a product.
